Reviving Molière with Artificial Intelligence
More than 350 years after Molière’s death, his influence remains strong in French culture. To honor his legacy, scholars at the Sorbonne University teamed up with artists to develop a play in his style. They used an AI tool called Le Chat to help craft dialogue, music, costumes, and scenery, giving the production a fresh, modern touch while staying true to the original spirit.
The project, named Molière Ex Machina, took two and a half years to develop. A group of researchers, including a trio called Obvious, worked closely with classical literature experts, linguists, and historians. They engaged in a process of continuous back-and-forth with the AI, feeding it information and refining its output through many rewrites. The goal was to produce a play that felt authentic yet innovative.
The Creative Process and Themes
The play, titled L’Astrologue ou les Faux Présages, is a three-act comedy about a wealthy Parisian who is convinced by a fake astrologer to marry his daughter off to an elderly wigmaker in debt. While the story could easily have been written by Molière himself, the dialogue, music, and costumes were generated with the help of Le Chat. The AI played a key role in shaping the script and overall aesthetic of the production.
Director Mickaël Bouffard explained that the process involved extensive collaboration with the AI, which initially produced only a short, uninteresting draft. Through multiple revisions and explanations about what worked and what didn’t, the researchers gradually built the full play. Bouffard emphasized that AI’s ability to store and recall all of Molière’s writings and readings was a major advantage. He noted, “We human beings can’t do that.”
The team also used AI to suggest themes relevant today. The play’s title and its focus on astrology prompted discussions about manipulation and disinformation, topics very much in the public eye. The use of AI as a creative tool allowed the team to explore these contemporary issues through a classical lens.
Implications for the Future of Theatre
The production has generated excitement and debate about AI’s role in the arts. Some critics found the AI’s dialogue to be “striking” and “believable,” while others raised concerns about the authenticity of machine-generated content.
