Osaurus started as an open-source project focused on running AI locally on Macs. It was inspired by a previous app called Dinoki, which aimed to be a personal AI assistant. Today, Osaurus connects with both locally hosted AI models and popular cloud providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. Users can choose which AI to use for each task, whether it’s a lightweight model running on their Mac or a larger cloud-based system. The platform acts as a control layer, managing different models and workflows through a simple interface.
Easy to Use, Safe, and Highly Flexible
Unlike some developer-focused tools, Osaurus is designed for everyday users. It offers an easy-to-navigate interface and runs inside a secure sandbox environment. This isolates AI processes from the rest of the system, helping protect your data and computer from potential risks.
Running local AI models requires significant hardware power. For smaller models, at least 64 GB of RAM is needed, and larger models like DeepSeek v4 might need 128 GB. Despite these requirements, the founder believes hardware will improve and costs will decrease over time, making local AI more accessible.
Osaurus supports a wide range of models, including MiniMax M2.5, Gemma 4, GPT-OSS, Llama, and DeepSeek V4. It also integrates with Apple’s on-device models and cloud services like OpenAI and Gemini. Users can connect with multiple models and tools simultaneously, creating a versatile AI environment on their Mac.
Additional Features and Future Plans
The platform comes with over 20 built-in plugins for tasks like email, calendar, browsing, music, file management, and more. Recently, voice capabilities were added, allowing users to interact with AI through speech. Since its launch, Osaurus has been downloaded over 112,000 times, showing strong interest from the community.
The team behind Osaurus is currently participating in a startup accelerator in New York. They are exploring ways to bring Osaurus to businesses, especially in sectors like healthcare and legal fields, where privacy is crucial. They also see potential for reducing reliance on large data centers by enabling more AI processing locally on Macs.
