Meta Fights Back Against Harassment From Its AI Glasses

Meta’s smart glasses have become a hot topic for all the wrong reasons. These camera-equipped AI glasses sold over 7 million pairs last year. But now, Meta faces backlash because some users are misusing them to harass strangers.
The company has started banning videos filmed with the glasses that show harassment on Instagram. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, made it clear: anyone posting videos that take advantage of or harass others will have their content removed. He said, “If you’re posting content that is taking advantage of people and harassing them, like a lot of these pickup line kind of videos, then we’re going to take the content down.”
Two large pickup artist accounts on Instagram were deactivated for posting such harassing content recorded with the glasses. Mosseri added, “We don’t want people to be surreptitiously taking videos of other people and harassing them and then posting them on our platform. So we’re trying to fight that every way we can.”
Privacy Concerns and Controversy
Privacy worries are at the center of the controversy. Meta has included code for a facial recognition feature called NameTag in software updates, though this feature hasn’t launched yet. The company hasn’t decided if it will actually release it.
Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, talked about this facial recognition tech in an interview, explaining the plans and potential uses. Still, many critics worry about privacy and misuse.
Adding to the backlash, singer Ella ‘Lorde’ O’Connor publicly slammed the glasses during a concert. She said, “Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy.” Social media users quickly labeled the glasses as “pervert glasses” after Kylie Jenner debuted a new Meta glasses model.
Meta’s Response and Future Plans
Meta advises users to turn off their glasses in sensitive places and to avoid harmful activities with them. The company is working hard to control the narrative around the glasses amid public backlash.
Meta’s Reality Labs division is focusing on technology that helps people with disabilities. For example, Meta pledged to provide free glasses to 130,000 blind military veterans who ask for them. This shows the glasses have positive uses beyond the controversy.
The company’s challenge is balancing innovation with user safety and privacy. The glasses’ sales prove strong demand, but misuse risks harming their reputation. Meta’s efforts to ban harassing content and clarify rules aim to keep the glasses from becoming tools for wrongdoing.
The story of Meta’s AI glasses is still unfolding. As the company navigates criticism, it must prove these smart devices can be used responsibly and for good.
