Instagram Turns Algorithm Control Into Frontline Feature

Instagram is putting algorithm control front and center. No more hiding it behind obscure settings.
Since December 2025, Instagram introduced Your Algorithm for Reels. They quickly expanded this to Explore and the main feed. Now, Instagram plans to make this customization a core part of the experience.
Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri revealed prototypes that let users access Your Algorithm through simple pull-down gestures on the feed and swipe-up prompts on Reels. This puts algorithm tuning right where users spend their time.
Your Algorithm shows an AI-generated summary of topics shaping content suggestions. Users can adjust these preferences directly. Changes apply simultaneously across Feed, Reels, and Explore, streamlining control over what appears.
Instagram first tested the reset feature in November 2024. Reset Suggested Content lets users wipe their recommendations clean from main feed, Explore, and Reels without affecting ads or followed accounts. Before resetting, users can filter out unwanted accounts and topics. After reset, the algorithm relearns preferences based on user actions like sharing.
Mosseri’s announcement marked a shift in tone. His post simply read “Finally.” The message was clear: algorithm customization is no longer an afterthought but a crucial user tool.
Instagram also offers chronological feed options through ‘Following’ and ‘Favourites’ views. This caters to users who want a break from AI-curated content.
On the content side, Instagram recently allowed users to rearrange grid posts. This move gives creators more control over their profile’s look—another win for user control.
The platform’s ranking signals now emphasize engagement, watch time, originality, saves, shares, relevance, and posting consistency. Reels with higher watch time and retention gain more exposure. Original content gets priority over reposts or duplicates. Saves and shares outweigh likes in importance.
AI powers these recommendations. It offers smaller accounts a chance to go viral if they generate strong engagement. Creators are advised to post Reels consistently, focus on engagement, produce valuable content, and use relevant keywords.
Avoiding common mistakes is crucial. Inconsistent posting, irrelevant hashtags, buying followers, reposting low-quality videos, ignoring interactions, and chasing likes alone no longer cut it.
Brands should lean into authentic, engaging content like storytelling and educational videos. These formats align with Instagram’s push for quality, originality, and meaningful engagement.
Looking ahead, AI will deliver even more personalized recommendations. Interactive formats will grow in importance, reflecting Instagram’s shift toward a user-centric, AI-driven future.
Cristian Dina, a respected industry voice and Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree at age 23, interviewed over 300 leaders to confirm these trends. Instagram’s moves aren’t just tweaks—they represent a fundamental change in how users interact with their feeds.
