Obesity Drug Funding Meets a New Longevity Question

Obesity research is moving in several directions at once, from new medicines for rare genetic conditions to questions about how existing treatments affect aging. On September 3, 2026, Superluminal Medicines announced a $60 million Series B financing to advance its lead obesity drug.

The company plans to use the financing to begin a Phase 1 clinical trial by the end of 2026. The trial will focus on rare, genetic forms of obesity, while Superluminal’s lead program is also being developed for hypothalamic obesity.

Superluminal Targets the MC4R Pathway

Superluminal’s lead program is a selective, biased MC4R agonist. The MC4R pathway helps regulate energy homeostasis and appetite, making it relevant to rare genetic forms of obesity, including Bardet-Biedl syndrome and hypothalamic obesity.

The company expects its Phase 1 clinical trial to begin by the end of 2026. That timing gives Superluminal a near-term development target as it moves its program from research toward testing in people.

BVF Partners, L.P., Deep Track Capital, Perceptive Advisors, RA Capital Management, Insight Partners, NVIDIA, and Catalio Capital Management are investors in Superluminal Medicines. Their participation gives the company financial backing for the next stage of work on its MC4R program.

The financing arrives as drug developers continue to pursue treatments that address different biological causes of obesity. Superluminal is focusing on rare genetic forms and hypothalamic obesity through the MC4R pathway, rather than presenting its program as a general treatment for all forms of the condition.

Nxera Pharma Set to Receive an $8.6 Million Payment

Another development announced on September 3 involves Nxera Pharma and Centessa Pharmaceuticals. Nxera Pharma will receive an $8.6 million milestone payment from Centessa after progress in late-stage development.

Eli Lilly and Company completed its acquisition of Centessa on June 24, 2026. Centessa is a subsidiary of Eli Lilly and owns the relevant pipeline, while Nxera Pharma retains rights to future development and commercialization milestones and royalties tied to Centessa’s OX2R agonist pipeline.

The payment connects a late-stage development milestone with Nxera’s continuing financial interest in the OX2R agonist pipeline. Its retained rights cover future development and commercialization milestones, along with royalties.

Semaglutide Study Raises Lifespan Questions

A study published in Nature on September 2, 2026, examined semaglutide in old mice and found a lifespan increase of about 12 percent. Female mice aged 20 months received semaglutide injections for the rest of their lives.

The median lifespan of the mice given semaglutide rose from 742 days to 834 days. The study also found that semaglutide outperformed dieting in maintaining memory and blood sugar levels in mice.

Semaglutide is sold under the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic. It is used to treat diabetes and obesity, lower cardiovascular risk, slow kidney decline, and treat fatty liver disease.

The liver data offered a possible biological link between semaglutide and calorie restriction. Gene activity in the treated mice showed significant overlap with gene activity seen during calorie restriction, including reduced inflammation and fat processing.

The same pattern included increased activity in genes linked to blood sugar handling and protein maintenance. As the Scientific American article put it, “The overlap was significant: both calorie restriction and the GLP-1 quieted down inflammation and fat processing, and both stepped up the genes for handling blood sugar and maintaining proteins.”

The findings come from mice, and the study measured lifespan, memory, blood sugar, and liver gene activity in that animal model. They do not establish that semaglutide extends human lifespan, but they add a longevity question to a medicine already used for diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular risk, kidney decline, and fatty liver disease.

Taken together, the three developments show how obesity drug research now spans rare genetic conditions, new pipeline assets, and broader studies of metabolism and aging.
