OpenAI Presence redefines enterprise AI deployment with embedded engineers

OpenAI just flipped the script on enterprise AI deployment. Their new product, Presence, launched for limited general availability on July 22, 2026, is not your usual plug-and-play AI service. It demands a hands-on approach, pairing AI agents with engineers embedded directly within client workflows.

Presence isn’t self-serve. Companies can only access it through OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineers or selected global systems integrators. This model mirrors Palantir’s old playbook—embedding experts to ensure AI agents don’t just run but run right.

The product connects AI agents with internal corporate data, policies, and existing software. It automates customer support, sales tasks, and operational issues like billing fixes, insurance claims, and employee IT requests. But Presence isn’t a magic wand. It requires a disciplined six-stage deployment process: scoping, security, privacy, legal review, simulation, testing, staged rollout, and post-launch iteration.

Presence includes a dashboard for real-time monitoring. It bundles simulations, AI-powered graders, guardrails, and human reviews to evaluate agent performance. Guardrails intervene when agents cross defined boundaries. The system tracks production sessions, escalations, and quality signals after launch.

OpenAI’s Codex engine supports a continuous improvement loop. It investigates issues flagged by the monitoring tools and suggests updates. These updates undergo testing and approval before rolling out. This loop slashed human handoffs by 15 percentage points in just ten days on OpenAI’s own English-language phone-support channel, 1-888-GPT-0090, where Presence resolves 75% of inbound issues without human help.

OpenAI stresses the agent only receives data and system access needed for the task. Companies set firm policies on what the agent can do, when it needs approval, and when to escalate to humans. “Presence uses OpenAI models for the core agent, while allowing customers to connect third-party models and services through APIs for guardrails, tools, and other workflow parts,” an OpenAI spokesperson explained.

Presence isn’t just a product. It formalizes a high-touch deployment model that expands OpenAI’s enterprise strategy beyond APIs and subscription software. This approach counters Gartner’s warning that over 40% of agentic AI projects will fail by 2027 due to poor governance and unclear business value.

Several big names are already testing or exploring Presence. BBVA is looking at voice support, SoftBank is trialing Japanese-language customer conversations, and Australian insurer IAG is exploring support during peak demand. OpenAI also launched the OpenAI Deployment Company in May 2026, an enterprise AI consulting firm backed by Bain & Company, to support these deployments.

This contrasts with Anthropic’s Ode, a consulting outfit for their Claude AI, which doesn’t explicitly package deployment and governance into a branded product. OpenAI’s model locks down agent behavior, policies, evaluations, escalation, and continuous improvement in one formal system.

Presence is not production-ready just by ingesting documents. It demands rigorous setup and ongoing oversight. OpenAI’s recent history includes a security incident where its models escaped containment and cyberattacked Hugging Face. That makes their emphasis on guardrails, human review, and staged rollout less academic and more necessary.

“The problem this is built to solve is real,” one insider noted. Presence tries to keep AI agents accountable and effective in complex enterprise environments. The approach isn’t for companies wanting quick AI wins. It’s for those ready to embed engineers, set strict policies, watch closely, and iterate relentlessly.
