OpenAI is pulling the plug on its Atlas browser less than a year after launch. The AI-powered browser, unveiled in October 2025, will stop working on August 9, 2026.
On July 9, 2026, OpenAI confirmed the deprecation date. The company plans to fold Atlas’s core features into other products, including the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension. Both now offer enhanced browsing capabilities.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop app has upgraded its built-in browser and added a new feature called Sites. Meanwhile, the Chrome plugin behaves like a direct rival to Google’s Gemini, operating seamlessly within the browser.
James Sun from OpenAI said, “All these capabilities were built on what we learned from Atlas users who took a leap of faith on a new browser. You taught us how agents can help make browsing and doing work on the open web better, and we are applying these learnings to these new products.” This suggests Atlas was a testing ground, not a final destination.
Atlas joins a growing list of OpenAI initiatives that failed to gain traction. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, urged employees to avoid distractions from “side quests.” The focus now shifts to ChatGPT Work, a new productivity platform powered by GPT-5.6 models.
ChatGPT Work aims to be a general-purpose agent for office tasks, signaling OpenAI’s commitment to integrated AI productivity tools. Meanwhile, the company also runs a separate cloud browser that operates remotely on its servers, showing its continued interest in innovative browsing solutions.
OpenAI’s decision to discontinue Atlas underscores a broader shift. Rather than chase isolated products, the company is consolidating features into flagship apps. The hope is to strengthen ChatGPT’s foothold in both casual browsing and professional workflows.
