SpaceXAI and Cursor Ready to Challenge AI Giants This Week

SpaceXAI and Cursor plan to launch their first joint AI model as soon as Wednesday. This isn’t just another release. It’s a direct shot at Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s upcoming GPT-5.5 and 5.6.

SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI until July 6, 2026, revealed its new name and logo on X. The company went public in June alongside SpaceX and X, with all three closing at $161 per share and pushing SpaceX’s valuation to $2.1 trillion.

Cursor, an AI coding startup, was acquired by SpaceX in a $60 billion all-stock deal. Cursor trained the new model from scratch on Colossus — xAI’s supercomputer. This approach signals a serious play to match or surpass current industry leaders.

Cursor isn’t new to the coding AI game. It runs Composer, its own coding model, and Elon Musk has hinted at an unreleased Grok in beta. The new joint model will test SpaceXAI’s ability to compete at the frontier of AI development.

Meanwhile, OpenAI prepares to launch GPT-5.6 publicly on Thursday with three tiers: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Terra will cost half as much as GPT-5.5. OpenAI shared preview access to GPT-5.6 with trusted US-based partners after the Trump administration approved a broader launch.

Anthropic is also back in the game. Last week, it restored access to its models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after restrictions were lifted. The US Department of Commerce had previously banned foreigners from using Anthropic’s models but lifted the ban on Fable last week.

The US government is drafting new criteria for security restrictions on AI models, following an executive order. OpenAI and Anthropic have confidential IPO filings aiming for valuations near $1 trillion, underscoring the massive stakes in AI today.

Elon Musk has noted that global electricity demand for AI cannot be met with terrestrial solutions alone. That might explain SpaceX’s aggressive AI investments, including $12.7 billion last year. This joint model launch is SpaceXAI’s first real test at the edge of AI innovation.
