Will Smith’s Amazon Adventure and the Discovery of a New Anaconda Species
In 2024, scientists announced the discovery of a new giant anaconda species in South America. The find was part of a 2022 expedition that caught the attention of a National Geographic camera crew. Actor Will Smith was also there, filming for NatGeo’s new documentary series, Pole to Pole with Will Smith. Fans can now join Smith on his Amazon journey through a short, three-minute clip.
Smith’s Amazon Exploration
The footage shows Smith traveling by boat along the river with a team of indigenous Waorani guides. They searched the riverbanks for the elusive anacondas, an experience that offers a rare glimpse into the rainforest’s wildlife. During the search, they finally spotted a female green anaconda measuring about 16 to 17 feet long, described as “pure muscle.”
The Waorani guides worked carefully to secure the enormous snake, which isn’t venomous but can bite. With some help from Smith and venom expert Bryan Fry, they managed to collect a scale sample from the anaconda for further testing. Fry explained that analyzing the sample can reveal how pollutants are accumulating in the water, giving scientists a better understanding of environmental health in the region.
The Discovery of a New Anaconda Species
The collected samples also enabled genetic analysis, leading to the identification of a new species: the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayama). This name roughly translates to “the great snake.” The genetic data showed that this species is distinct from the well-known southern green anaconda (Eunectes murinus). The two species likely diverged around 10 million years ago.
The northern green anaconda’s range includes parts of Venezuela, Colombia, Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil. Its discovery adds a new chapter to the story of South America’s incredible biodiversity. The find underscores how much there is still to learn about the rainforest’s mysterious creatures.
Will Smith’s Amazon adventure not only offers a thrilling glimpse of jungle life but also highlights the importance of scientific exploration and conservation. The collaboration between scientists and local guides continues to uncover new species and deepen our understanding of the planet’s rich ecosystems.
