The Free VPN Tradeoff: Privacy Gains, Hidden Risks, and Speed Costs

A free VPN can hide your normal IP address, protect the connection to its server, and reduce what your internet provider or Wi-Fi operator learns about your online destinations. But that privacy comes with questions about speed, data handling, and the company operating the service.

What happens to your traffic after it enters the VPN? That question matters because a VPN app can see internet traffic as it passes through the service. A 2026 NDSS study of 281 popular Android VPN apps found problems that show why “free” needs closer inspection.

What a VPN Does for Your Connection

A virtual private network routes your internet connection through a VPN server before sending traffic to websites and online services. The VPN app encrypts the connection between your device and that server, creating a protected link across that part of the journey.

Websites you visit see the server’s public IP address instead of your normal one. This can reduce what your internet provider or Wi-Fi operator learns about the destinations you connect to, and a VPN setup allows you to change your virtual location.

That protection has clear limits. A VPN does not make you anonymous because websites can still recognize you through logged-in accounts, cookies, GPS data, and other identifiers. If you sign into an account, use cookies, or share location data, the VPN does not erase those signals.

“The old ‘if it’s free, you’re the product’ line is catchy, but it’s too simple for free VPNs,” said Novak Božović, author of the article on VPN risks. The business model still matters, though, because some free VPN apps make money through advertising or by sharing information with third parties.

Why Free VPN Apps Deserve a Closer Look

Free VPN plans do not all work the same way. Plans backed by paying subscribers are easier to evaluate than unlimited VPNs that do not explain how they make money. That difference gives users a useful question to ask before sending internet traffic through the service: how does the VPN support its free access?

The NDSS study tested 281 popular VPN apps available on the Google Play Store. Its findings identified several ways an app could fail to provide the protection users expect:

  • 29 apps leaked user traffic outside the VPN tunnel.
  • 61 apps transmitted some unencrypted data.
  • 76 apps sent Android Advertising IDs.

These findings do not mean every free VPN has the same practices, but they show why an app’s label alone cannot prove that its connection is private. A VPN must protect traffic as it moves between your device and its server, and the study found apps that did not keep all user traffic inside that tunnel.

A free plan can also limit the experience without creating a security problem. It may offer fewer server locations or impose data limits, while sending traffic through another server can add latency or reduce connection speeds. Some websites, streaming services, and workplace systems also block VPN connections.

Should You Leave a VPN On All the Time?

“A VPN can increase your privacy online, but should you leave it on 24/7?” asked Alec Hively, author of the article on the benefits of leaving a VPN on. The answer depends on what you want the VPN to do and which tradeoffs you can accept.

Keeping a VPN active can reduce what your internet provider or Wi-Fi operator learns about the destinations you connect to. It can also keep your connection routed through the VPN server, so websites see that server’s public IP address instead of your normal one.

But an always-on VPN does not remove every privacy signal. Logged-in accounts, cookies, GPS data, and other identifiers can still connect activity to you. The VPN also cannot stop malicious software from running on your computer or prevent phishing.

That distinction matters because having a VPN does not change whether you need antivirus or other malware protection. A VPN protects the connection between your device and its server; it does not serve as a replacement for protection against malicious software or phishing.

The strongest choice starts with clear expectations. A VPN can add privacy, change your virtual location, and reduce visibility for your internet provider or Wi-Fi operator, but it cannot provide anonymity or solve every security problem. Free users also need to weigh data limits, fewer server locations, blocked services, slower connections, and the way an app funds its operation.

Free VPNs can offer real benefits, yet the NDSS findings show why careful evaluation matters before trusting one with internet traffic. The future of private browsing will depend not only on whether a VPN is free, but on whether its protections, limits, and business model are clear.
