Thunderbolt 5’s Big Speed Boost May Not Matter to Everyone

Thunderbolt 5 brings a major jump in speed and power, but that does not make Thunderbolt 4 outdated for every setup. The newer connection is built for high-resolution displays, high refresh rates, fast external drives, and demanding workstations. For mainstream use, Thunderbolt 4 remains the better choice.

The biggest difference comes down to bandwidth. Thunderbolt 4 provides 40Gbps of bandwidth, while Thunderbolt 5 raises the baseline to 80Gbps. Thunderbolt 5 can also allocate 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps in the other, giving it twice Thunderbolt 4’s bidirectional data transfer.

Thunderbolt 5 focuses on speed and power

That extra bandwidth gives Thunderbolt 5 more room for demanding setups. The connection can handle multiple 4K displays at higher refresh rates or certain 8K configurations. Thunderbolt 4 supports one 8K display or two 4K displays at 60Hz, which still covers a wide range of everyday display arrangements.

The difference matters most when a setup pushes several screens or asks external storage to move large amounts of data. Thunderbolt 5 is more suitable for high-res, high-refresh rate displays and fast external drives, while Thunderbolt 4 already meets the needs of many people using one or two displays.

Power delivery also gets a large increase. Thunderbolt 5 brings 240 watts of power delivery, compared with the 100-watt maximum listed for Apple’s Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable. Apple’s Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable supports up to 240W, matching the newer connection’s power figure.

That extra power gives Thunderbolt 5 another advantage in a demanding setup. Still, the benefit depends on whether the connected devices can use it. As Thomas Godwin put it, “Thunderbolt 5 offers extremely fast data transfer and lots of power, but most devices can’t take advantage of it.”

Compatibility and cable prices

That makes the Thunderbolt 5 cable less expensive than Apple’s Thunderbolt 4 Pro options, but it is also shorter. Cable length can matter when equipment sits farther apart, so the lower price does not tell the whole story. Buyers need to weigh the connection they need against the reach they want.

Which Thunderbolt connection makes sense?

Most buyers should go with Thunderbolt 4 for mainstream use. Its 40Gbps bandwidth supports one 8K display or two 4K displays at 60Hz, and its compatibility with common Thunderbolt and USB4 equipment can cover a standard computer setup.

Thunderbolt 5 makes more sense for people building a demanding workstation. Multiple 4K displays with higher refresh rates, certain 8K configurations, fast external drives, and the need for up to 240 watts of power all point toward the newer connection.

That does not mean every high-end laptop owner needs Thunderbolt 5. Lenovo’s Legion 9i Gen 10 and the Razer Blade 18 are listed as high-end laptops, but the choice still depends on the devices connected to the computer. The connection’s value comes from the demands of the full setup, not from the laptop category alone.
