Turn Your MacBook Into a Battery-Saving Powerhouse

Your MacBook’s battery life can change with a handful of settings, and Apple puts the most effective option right inside Energy Mode. A few minutes spent adjusting charging, display, streaming, keyboard, and app settings can help you get more time between charges and protect the battery over the long run.
The same power-saving thinking applies beyond laptops. Retro handhelds such as Nintendo’s Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Advance, along with Sega’s Game Gear and Atari’s Lynx, can also benefit from rechargeable batteries and smarter power habits.
Start With Your MacBook’s Biggest Battery Controls
Apple’s Low Power Mode is the most effective setting for extending MacBook battery life. Open the On battery section, switch Energy Mode to Low Power, and the MacBook will focus on lasting longer away from an outlet.
The menu bar’s Battery shortcut gives you a useful snapshot before you change anything. It reveals the battery’s charge, the current Energy Mode, and the apps using power, so you can see what is happening without searching through several menus.
Activity Monitor offers a closer look through its Energy tab. This view shows the apps draining power, while Energy Impact indicates current power usage. If one app is using much more energy than expected, the Energy tab identifies it and helps explain why the battery is falling faster.
Display settings can also make a major difference. Go to System Settings > Battery > Options and turn on Slightly dim the display on battery. You can also set Turn display off on battery when inactive to a short interval, such as five or two minutes.
Streaming video has its own battery option. Turn on Optimize video streaming while on battery to reduce energy use during streaming video. Lowering keyboard backlight brightness can save power as well, and you can set the backlight to turn off after inactivity.
Protect Battery Capacity Over Time
Battery life means two things: the hours you get from one charge and the battery’s ability to hold a charge over the long run. To optimize charging, click the “i” next to Charging and choose Optimize Battery Charging.
Apple recommends replacing a MacBook’s battery if the percentage is below 80 percent. That gives you a clear point to consider service, including a visit to a Genius Bar, when the battery no longer delivers the capacity you need.
These settings work best as a system rather than as isolated tricks. Low Power Mode handles the largest Energy Mode change, dimming the display reduces screen demand, and short inactive intervals prevent the display from staying on when you are not using the MacBook.
Rechargeable batteries bring the same practical advantage to retro gaming. NiMH rechargeable batteries such as Panasonic Eneloop and IKEA LADDA are recommended for retro handhelds, including systems requiring 4 × AA, 2 × AA, 2 × AAA, 6 × AA, and 6 × AA batteries.
A good rule of thumb is to buy two full sets of batteries for retro handhelds. One set can power the device while the other is ready to go, creating a simple rotation that avoids disposable batteries.
Some models, including the original Game Boy, can be modded with USB-C rechargeable battery pack kits. Handheld Legend is a brand of USB-C battery mods, giving owners another path to rechargeable power for compatible devices.
Know What Your MacBook Can Drive
Battery settings are only part of the MacBook experience. External display support varies by model, and most current MacBook models support at least two external displays. The MacBook Neo stands apart because it supports only one external display.
- MacBook Neo: one external display, up to one 4K display at 60Hz.
- MacBook Air (M5): up to two 6K displays at 60Hz or two 4K displays at 144Hz.
- MacBook Pro (M5): up to two 6K displays at 60Hz or two 4K displays at 144Hz.
- MacBook Pro (M5 Pro): up to three 6K displays at 60Hz or three 4K displays at 144Hz.
- MacBook Pro (M5 Max): up to two 8K displays at 60Hz, four 6K displays at 60Hz, or four 4K displays at 144Hz.
The maximum resolution and refresh rate vary depending on the MacBook model and the connected display. That makes the model name important when planning a desk with multiple screens.
The MacBook Neo has only one USB-C port that can support a display, and that port can handle up to one 4K display at 60Hz. The port closest to the back of the MacBook Neo is the high-speed USB 3 connection and supports video output, while the further-forward USB 2 port cannot carry a display signal.
The MacBook Neo does not support Thunderbolt. A Thunderbolt dock can connect multiple accessories, but it does not increase the display output limit beyond Apple’s specifications, and basic USB hubs cannot increase the display limit either.
DisplayLink can connect more displays than Apple’s official limits through hardware and software, but it may not support high-demand tasks or copy-protected streams. Older MacBook models may support more displays when the laptop is closed, depending on the model.
That leaves MacBook owners with a clear path: check Energy Mode, reduce display and keyboard demand, optimize charging, and watch Activity Monitor’s Energy tab. Then match your display setup to the limits of your exact MacBook, because the right settings and the right expectations can keep the machine useful long after the next charge begins.
