Subaru Solterra 2026 Refresh Reboots Electric AWD SUV
The 2026 Subaru Solterra arrives with a serious midlife update. It ditches its sluggish past and tries to stake a claim in the crowded EV SUV market.
Subaru didn’t reinvent the wheel. The Solterra still shares its bones with the Toyota bZ4X, riding on the e-TNGA platform. But under the skin, it’s a different beast. The battery is now 74.7 kWh, up slightly from before, but the EPA range jumps from 227 to 288 miles. That’s not a typo. This vehicle finally reaches nearly 300 miles between charges.
Power comes in two flavors. The base Solterra produces 233 horsepower from dual motors powering all four wheels. The new XT trim almost doubles front motor output, delivering a combined 338 horsepower and a sub-five-second 0-60 mph sprint. The tradeoff is a slight drop in range to 278 miles, still respectable.
Charging got a much-needed upgrade. Subaru swapped out the older CCS1 port for the native Tesla NACS connector. That means direct access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without adapters. DC fast charging now peaks at 150 kW, up from 100 kW. Subaru claims a 10-80% charge can take as little as 30 minutes, though real-world times depend on battery state and charger availability.
Subaru’s hallmark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gets a high-tech makeover. Instead of a mechanical link, the Solterra uses independent front and rear electric motors controlled by software. Torque shifts instantly and precisely between axles, reacting faster than any mechanical system. Ground clearance is generous at 8.3 inches—two inches more than before—making this EV genuinely capable on gravel, snow, and mud.
Inside, Subaru ditched the tired small screen for a 14-inch touchscreen that controls nearly everything. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. The interface is clearly Toyota-derived—functional but uninspiring. Physical knobs remain for basics like volume and temperature. The digital gauge cluster positions the speedometer close to the driver’s line of sight, a subtle but thoughtful touch.
The cabin is roomy and practical. The flat floor allows three adults to sit in back without discomfort. Materials are durable but not luxurious—perforated leatherette seats with heating are standard, with real leather optional on XT trims. Storage is limited. There’s no glove box or front trunk, and the center console lacks a lid, leaving items exposed.
The steering wheel remains a controversial square shape. It looks modern in photos but feels awkward in tight maneuvers. Some drivers will adapt; others won’t.
Driving the Solterra XT reveals the best part: Subaru’s signature composure. The suspension is firm yet comfortable. Body roll is minimal. Steering feedback is steady and precise. This EV doesn’t float or wallow at highway speeds like many of its rivals. It handles corners with confidence, reflecting Subaru’s tuning efforts to differentiate from its Toyota sibling.
Pricing starts at $38,495 for the base AWD model. The XT trim jumps to $42,895. That’s competitive, especially considering the recent price cuts and added features. The new Solterra is no longer a reluctant entry into the EV space—it’s a credible contender for buyers wanting an electric SUV with genuine all-terrain chops.
Subaru’s cautious approach paid off. The Solterra doesn’t dazzle with flashy tech or radical design. Instead, it refines the essentials: decent range, solid performance, true AWD capability, and practical interior space. It’s not a Tesla Model Y killer—but it doesn’t need to be. The Solterra now serves the Subaru faithful who want to go electric without giving up the brand’s rugged DNA.
For anyone in the market for an electric SUV that balances everyday usability with off-road confidence, the 2026 Solterra refresh demands a hard look. It’s no longer an also-ran. It stands on its own two wheels—quietly but firmly.
