Why Apple Put a Two-Phone Cap on iPhone Duo Preorders

Apple has placed a two-unit limit on iPhone Duo pre-orders, adding a new restriction as demand pushes delivery estimates into the future. The Apple Store now prevents customers from checking out with more than two iPhone Duo units in one order.

The notification is clear: “A maximum of 2 iPhone Duo can be purchased per customer. Please adjust the total quantity of iPhone Duo in your order before checking out.” Some customers were able to order more than two units when pre-orders opened on October 16, but Apple now limits the total to two per customer.

The purchase cap arrives during a busy pre-order period for Apple’s newest phone. Apple has described demand for the iPhone Duo as “nothing short of extraordinary,” and shipping dates moved to 2027 soon after pre-orders began.

Shipping dates have moved in several directions

All the stores checked show a shipping estimate of January 22. That estimate comes after rapid delivery-date changes, with some iPhone Duo orders moving into next year and others arriving sooner than the first prediction.

The timeline has shifted more than once. On October 19, delivery dates slipped from December to launch day, while pre-orders also experienced shipping-date slips to next year. The iPhone Duo will hit stores on October 23, giving customers another way to buy the device if they do not want to wait for a later shipment.

Best Buy shows different dates based on the model and purchase option. Its listing shows a November 10 pickup and shipping date for the 512GB Duo, while the 256GB model shows December 14.

The mixed estimates make the two-unit limit stand out. Apple is managing a pre-order rush at the same time customers are seeing delivery dates change, and some orders have arrived sooner than predicted.

What customers can choose before buying

Apple announced the iPhone Duo last month, then launched its Get Ready tool on October 12. The tool lets customers choose the model, color, storage capacity, carrier, trade-in options, and accessories before the purchase window opens.

Get Ready also lets users set up a payment method and shipping address ahead of time. That preparation was designed for the October 16 pre-order opening, when customers could place orders through Apple.

Prices start at $1,999 for the 256GB model and reach $3,199 for the 2TB model. The 256GB version costs $83.29 per month on installment plans or $57.99 per month through the Apple Upgrade program.

Trade-in offers can reduce the cost. Apple offers up to $885 in credit for eligible iPhone trade-ins, while AT&T offers up to $1,200 in trade-ins and an extra $200 per line on plans for online orders.

Best Buy lists deals starting at $55.96 per month on an installment plan with AT&T. Those offers give customers another route to the iPhone Duo while Apple’s own shipping estimates continue to change.

A rushed start for a high-demand phone

The early ordering experience has drawn criticism as well as strong interest. Mark Gurman described Apple’s iPhone Duo preorders as “an absolute disaster.” That comment came as customers dealt with changing delivery dates and different estimates across retailers.

The iPhone Duo pre-order period began on October 16, and Apple’s stores now allow no more than two units per customer. The restriction does not erase the demand, but it limits how many devices one customer can place in a single order.

For customers ordering through Apple, the current picture is simple but unsettled: two iPhone Duo units per customer, a January 22 shipping estimate at the stores checked, and a store launch date of October 23. Best Buy has its own dates, including November 10 for the 512GB Duo and December 14 for the 256GB model.

Those dates may not tell the whole story, since some orders have arrived sooner than predicted. Still, the two-unit checkout limit and the move toward 2027 shipping dates show how difficult the iPhone Duo pre-order has become to navigate.
