AI-Driven Supplement Scams and Privacy Battles Shake Social Media

AI-generated content now fuels a booming supplement marketing scam on TikTok. Harry Chang, a New Zealand content creator, made a viral AI video promoting Rosabella supplements. His clip, titled “Nigerian SECRET to CLEAN LIVER!!”, borrowed its script from a TikTok account called liverboosthub11.
Chang used AI tools to generate two Black women avatars—one in a surgical mask, another on stage. The foreground avatar spoke with a “strong African American accent,” saying, “Why is nobody talking about what this hoe said?! If you’ve got issues with that belly, must watch!” He picked the voice from ElevenLabs, naming it “Latisha 1.”
The video scored 1.3 million TikTok views and earned Chang tens of thousands in affiliate sales. He admitted favoring the “elderly health” market in the U.S., where demand for health products is high among people over 35. “If you’re trying to sell health products to a 50-year-old, well, make your avatar 50 years old,” Chang said. “Builds curiosity, builds intrigue.”
Rosabella’s marketing strategy revolves around AI-generated influencers. The company is less a traditional supplement brand and more a social media AI content hustle. A lawsuit from Humann, a rival supplement company, claims Rosabella and competitor Ambrosia Brands orchestrated hundreds of TikTok Shop videos. These feature AI-generated “doctors” pushing their products—raising legal questions about false advertising and consumer deception.
Several YouTube videos tied to this AI marketing were removed after media inquiries. Rosabella’s practices attracted coverage from multiple outlets and a podcast exploring AI scams. The lawsuit highlights the blurred lines between AI content creation and ethical marketing, especially when AI personas impersonate medical professionals.
Meanwhile, TikTok faces regulatory heat in Europe for privacy and child safety issues. The European Commission’s preliminary Digital Services Act findings demand TikTok tighten minors’ default privacy settings. The EU wants minors’ content hidden from public feeds and limited to chosen viewers. Even private accounts leak user data through follower lists and visible profile photos.
Henna Virkkunen, EU tech chief, warned that high protection for minors must be default, not optional. Failure to comply could cost TikTok up to 6 percent of its global revenue. The UK’s Ofcom launched a similar investigation, signaling growing scrutiny of social media platforms’ handling of young users.
Privacy concerns extend to healthcare apps. The FTC sued Hims & Hers for allegedly sharing sensitive customer health data with tech giants like Meta and Snap. This publicly traded company offers prescription meds for sexual wellness, mental health, and weight loss. FTC documents accuse Hims & Hers of embedding trackers from multiple platforms that captured user health info without proper consent.
Hims & Hers also faced charges of deceptive billing and tricky cancellation policies. While the company didn’t deny the claims outright, it pointed to its privacy policy saying users can choose how their data is used. The FTC has previously taken action against Cerebral, Monument, GoodRx, and BetterHelp for similar violations.
These developments reveal a troubling pattern: AI-driven marketing exploits and careless data sharing erode trust. Social media platforms and supplement brands use AI-generated content to hook consumers, while sensitive health data leaks to advertisers unchecked. Regulators are tightening the screws, but the digital Wild West is far from tamed.
