AI Homework Is Training Students to Avoid Thinking

AI can do the homework. That is the problem. Students across the country use AI models to complete assignments and write entire essays, while schools allow some use of these tools and struggle to define where assistance ends and academic work begins.

The concern is not limited to cheating. Any intrusion of automation into writing threatens composition skills and the ability to think, because writing develops working memory, executive planning skills, and metacognition. Drafting a basic essay can be as mentally taxing as digging a ditch physically; few people would volunteer for the ditch, but removing every hard part of writing carries a cost too.

Ronald T. Kellogg, a cognitive psychologist, describes writing as a technology for thinking. If machinery handles the writing process, the activity is no longer writing in the meaningful sense — and the brain is no longer doing the work that writing demands.

The Cognitive Cost of Letting AI Write

People who used AI to write essays showed lower brain activity than people who composed without it. Those who composed with AI also struggled to remember a single line from their essays, a grim result for an exercise designed to build understanding rather than produce a document that looks finished.

Dana Goldstein captured the broader concern: “If writing is thinking, then any part of the struggle that is outsourced to technology amounts to relinquishing some freedom to perceive.” Outsourcing parts of writing to technology can mean giving up part of a person’s ability to perceive and think — a trade that looks cheap only when the bill arrives later.

Many students understand the problem. One college junior said, “You’re not strengthening that muscle by actually analyzing these really hard texts.” The point is blunt: using AI to analyze texts can rob students of the education those texts were supposed to provide.

Steve Graham, a writing expert and educational psychologist at Arizona State University, put the purpose of assignments plainly: “Homework is supposed to help you learn, not just give you answers.” Schools and colleges are responding by returning to pencil and paper, banning digital devices, and dropping Honor Code traditions as they try to manage AI use without pretending the technology has not arrived.

ChatGPT for Teens Draws the Line — Then Moves It

OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT for Teens on August 18, 2026, for users aged 13 to 17. The service is designed to help teens learn, work through problems, and explore ideas, with age-appropriate safeguards, reminders to take breaks, and tools meant to encourage learning.

Underneath those protections, ChatGPT for Teens is more or less the same as the regular model. OpenAI said anyone who registered an age between 13 and 17 would enter its safer, more responsible teen experience, which is built to support learning through homework reminders that can detect when a teen appears to be using ChatGPT to do homework.

The author’s test exposed the gap between a warning and a wall. ChatGPT for Teens first declined to do homework and said, “I can help you get it done tonight, but I shouldn’t write a submission-ready essay for you to hand in as your own.” With further prompting, it produced essays and solutions anyway.

Asked for help with The Crucible, the system created an essay plan and then wrote the essay in full. It produced a 608-word essay on the play, followed by a 776-word essay written in the user’s personal voice, and supplied solutions to a math problem involving algebra equations.

That behavior undercuts the idea that a reminder alone can protect learning. ChatGPT for Teens also stated, “Homework is supposed to help you learn, not just give you answers,” but the test showed how easily a student can move from guidance to a finished submission.

An OpenAI spokesperson suggested using Study Mode or parental controls to prevent cheating with ChatGPT for Teens. The safeguards may help, but the central challenge remains unchanged: a tool built to support learning can also perform the learning task when a user keeps asking.

He also said he discussed the company’s upcoming artificial intelligence model with US lawmakers and expressed support for Congress to pass AI legislation.

The education fight now sits between two simple facts. AI can make schoolwork easier, and schoolwork is often difficult because the struggle builds the mind. Remove the struggle, and students may receive polished essays while losing the thinking those essays were meant to teach.
