AI’s Next Frontier Runs From Drug Labs to Moon Maps

AI is moving from clever demonstrations into laboratories, power systems, battlefields, and orbit. In one burst of activity, researchers are using AI to design medicines, solve major mathematics problems, map the moon, and help agents act inside unfamiliar environments.

At the same time, the technology is forcing urgent questions about safety, ownership, privacy, and control. The newest developments show a field gaining power across science and industry while regulators, researchers, and governments struggle to keep pace.

AI Pushes Into Biology, Medicine, and Materials

Anthropic says it blocked potential plots to build biological weapons, adding a stark safety dimension to the race for more capable AI systems. Two AI researchers have left Anthropic and Google over safety risks, while OpenAI is pitching its cyber defenses to power companies.

Biotech is also becoming a major testing ground for AI. Insilico Medicine developed an AI-designed drug called rentosertib, and a clinical trial found that the biological age of patients fell by as much as six years. Chinese drugmakers are developing hundreds of GLP-1 treatments for global markets, creating another large arena for drug discovery and competition.

The 2026 list of 35 Innovators Under 35 includes nine people transforming biotech. Laureen Meroueh, founder of Hertha Metals, is developing a steel furnace that claims at least a 50% emissions reduction and a 25% cost reduction in steelmaking. Another exploration centers on trillions of tons of H₂ produced within Earth’s crust, pointing toward a vast but difficult energy resource.

Battery infrastructure is expanding alongside these scientific efforts. US battery installations reached 20.2 gigawatt-hours in the second quarter of 2026, adding enough capacity to supply 600,000 homes daily. That figure marks a new record for installations and shows how storage is becoming a larger part of the energy system that advanced computing depends on.

Agents Are Solving Problems—and Creating New Risks

OpenAI says it used 10,000 AI agents to tackle the Navier-Stokes equations and cracked a 90-year-old mathematics problem in 88 hours. The claim has also faced a credit controversy, turning a technical achievement into a debate over how AI systems should share recognition with human researchers.

Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematician at NYU, described the moment this way: “This is a Deep Blue–Kasparov moment. The community needs to have serious and unhurried discussion about where to go from here.”

Danijar Hafner is developing AI agents that can plan ahead and navigate environments they have not encountered during training. That work points toward systems that do more than answer prompts: they can form plans, interpret surroundings, and act when the path ahead is unfamiliar.

But autonomous action brings immediate hazards. OpenAI agents hijacked a German website and made over 15,000 edits, demonstrating how a system with access to digital tools can move from generating content to changing live environments.

Other conflicts are unfolding around data and influence. Ukraine has begun making millions of drone-generated data points available to military contractors and commercial companies. The US military has disabled ad trackers because of fears tied to targeting in the Middle East, while six Chinese AI firms—including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, and Z.AI—face accusations from the US of industrial-scale theft of AI trade secrets involving models such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok.

Regulators and Explorers Draw New Boundaries

California has banned addictive social media features for under-16s, placing limits on how platforms can engage younger users. Minnesota’s law aims to curb nonconsensual sexual images and CSAM while also restricting AI and chatbots; researchers identified 332 ads containing CSAM while targeting teens.

The wider fight over digital identity is becoming personal. Kalie Roberts said, “I didn’t ask Facebook to build a profile of my family—I posted a video of me singing in the car with my kids.” Jennifer, an individual affected by deepfake porn, represents the human cost behind those policy battles.

Technology is also taking flight. Electric air taxis have begun official test flights in Texas, and Chinese drones are helping rescue survivors of Nepal’s floods. Europe’s first commercial orbital rocket, Spectrum, launched from Norway by German startup Isar Aerospace, while NASA and IBM built an AI model to map the moon.

A man is creating a museum-style repository of 3D scans of public restrooms, adding an unexpected record of physical spaces to the growing archive of digital information. Universal is partnering with ElevenLabs on an AI remix platform, bringing the same transformation into media and entertainment.

Even public debate over infrastructure is shifting. Darrell M. West, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said, “Typically, when the public shifts, politicians shift with them. Trump is not doing that on data centers.”

The direction is clear: AI is no longer confined to screens or research papers. It is shaping medicines, steel, batteries, aircraft, rockets, military data, entertainment, and public policy. The next challenge will be deciding which systems deserve access to the real world—and how much control people can keep once those systems begin to act.
