Amazon Savings, Prime Perks, and a Second Life for Old Kindles

Amazon Prime can cost less than its sticker price, and in some cases, it can cost nothing for a stretch of time. The savings go beyond free trials, with household sharing, discounted plans, employee benefits, card credits, and service bundles all changing the value equation.

Amazon’s older Kindle devices are facing a different turning point. Software support ended for models released before 2013, but those readers are not useless: owners can keep reading downloaded books, sideload new files, or repurpose the device into something completely different.

Five Ways to Pay Less for Amazon Prime

1. Start with the standard 30-day free trial. This remains the simplest way to get Prime at no cost if you qualify. The trial includes fast shipping, exclusive discounts on some products, improved Alexa, and access to Prime Video without an initial subscription fee.

Amazon requires a payment method, and the trial converts into a paid subscription unless you cancel your Amazon Prime membership before renewal. Amazon does not specify a waiting period before former subscribers qualify for another free trial, but that does not guarantee free Prime every year during the shopping season.

2. Check Prime for Young Adults. Eligible new members receive six months of Amazon Prime at no cost. The offer covers adults ages 18 to 24 and higher-education students of any age, although applicants must provide proof of age or school enrollment.

After the free period, members can choose a $7.49 monthly plan or pay $69 annually. That is half the $14.99 regular monthly membership price, giving younger members a clear path to keep the benefits without paying the full monthly rate.

3. Look at Prime Access. Eligible new members can receive a 30-day free trial, then pay $6.99 per month if they receive qualifying government assistance or meet Amazon’s income requirements. Prime Access is open to SNAP or Medicaid recipients and includes the same perks as standard Prime membership.

Current Prime members may be able to transition to the discounted membership, so the lower price is not limited to people who have never used Prime.

4. Share through Amazon Family. A paying subscriber can share select Prime benefits with another adult living at the same primary address. Those benefits include fast shipping, exclusive shopping deals, and ad-supported Prime Video, while each adult keeps a separate Amazon account.

There is no need to borrow login credentials to place an order, but the family organizer must share a payment method that the other adult can use for purchases. Before sending an invitation, review payment, digital content, and order history sharing settings. The program limits who can participate, and free trial or Prime for Young Adults members cannot share their benefits through Amazon Family.

The old Prime Invitee program is no longer an option. Amazon ended it in October 2025, after it had allowed members to share free shipping with people outside their household. Friends at another address cannot receive that free shipping benefit through the program.

5. Check work benefits, bundles, and card offers. Eligible United States employees at Amazon receive free Prime memberships, while Whole Foods announced that its hourly workers will receive the same benefit beginning January 1, 2027.

Metro by T-Mobile began bundling Prime with select plans in 2018, but stopped offering the perk to new customers on September 17, 2026. Eligible legacy customers can still keep it. Existing Navy Federal Visa Signature Flagship Rewards cardholders receive a $139 statement credit toward an annual Amazon Prime membership paid with the card, although the offer is no longer open to new applicants. The newer Flagship Premier card replaced it and offers a $100 airline cre.

Prime Can Pay for Itself During Deal Season

Prime membership can make sense if you use Prime Day deals or need a gift delivered tomorrow. Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days runs from October 6th through the 7th, offering early bird deals on products that will likely receive discounts again during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Those deals are not exclusive to Amazon. Best Buy, Walmart, Newegg, and other retailers compete with similar sales, so shoppers can compare prices instead of treating the Prime label as an automatic bargain.

Prime Video also remains part of the membership package. A listing dated 1d ago includes Leni Klum’s honest thoughts about mother Heidi’s 2026 Halloween costume, a video of Heidi Klum revealing her 2026 over-the-top Halloween costume, and a feature about how many people created it. The listing also includes Caleb Shomo discussing being okay with losing fans after coming out.

Old Kindles Can Still Read, Adapt, and Work

Amazon ended software support starting May 20 for Kindle devices released before 2013. The affected models include the very first Kindle, Kindle 2, Kindle DX, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and the first Kindle Paperwhite.

The Kindle first debuted in 2007, so devices from 2012 or earlier are no longer supported. Amazon said the change affects about 3 percent of its active users and cited updates in technology, saying, “These models have been supported for at least 14 years — some as long as 18 years — but technology has come a long way in that time,”

A 14-year-old Kindle still works technically. Owners can read books already downloaded as long as they remain logged in, but they should not deregister or reset the device because doing so will lock them out.

New books can still reach an older Kindle through sideloading. Connect the device with a USB data cable and import files directly instead of using Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” feature. Calibre, an open-source tool for formatting and transferring ebooks, can send personal documents and PDFs to Kindles.

Free PDFs are available through internet repositories such as the Internet Archive’s Open Library and Project Gutenberg. Keep backup copies on a computer in case access to files on the Kindle is lost. A Kindle display uses power very slowly, so the device can last a long time on a charge.

Devices released in 2013 and later can still download new purchased or borrowed content as usual. That group includes recent Kindle Paperwhite models, the seventh to twelfth generations of the entry-level Kindle, and premium devices such as Kindle Voyage, released in 2014.

There is also a more inventive option: connect an external home server built with a micro computer such as a Raspberry Pi, then run a companion script available for free on GitHub. The setup formats data into a simple grayscale image, and the Kindle wakes on a timer, downloads the fresh image over Wi-Fi, and displays it.

If the old device has reached the end of its useful life, perform a factory reset through “Settings” and “Reset to Factory Defaults.” Amazon offers 20 percent off to people affected by the software-support changes, while readers ready to leave Amazon can consider ereader alternatives from Boox and Kobo.
