Apple Watch Gestures, Lockdown Mode, and Fitbit HRV Explained

Apple devices hide useful controls behind simple gestures, button presses, and settings menus. AssistiveTouch can make an Apple Watch easier to control without touching its screen, while Apple TV shortcuts can solve common problems in seconds. On the security side, iPhone Lockdown Mode adds strong protections against spyware, and Fitbit offers health data that can help track recovery.

These features serve different purposes, but they share one idea: the device can do more when you know where to look. Here is how each one works, what it changes, and when it may help.

AssistiveTouch Makes Apple Watch Control More Flexible

AssistiveTouch is an accessibility feature built into an Apple Watch running the latest version of watchOS. It lets you control the watch without touching the screen, which can help people with motor disabilities navigate the interface. It can also unlock useful options for anyone who has full hands, wears gloves, or finds tapping the display uncomfortable.

The feature uses data from built-in sensors, including the gyroscope, accelerometer, and optical heart rate sensor. Together, they detect small movements from your arm, hand, and fingers, so you can control the system without special hardware. With AssistiveTouch enabled, you can tap buttons, scroll through the screen, and use Apple Pay without directly touching the display.

Apple Watch finger gestures are enabled by default. One example is pinching your fingers twice to interact with the screen. To turn on the full feature, open the Settings app, go to Accessibility, choose AssistiveTouch, and switch it on. Then turn on Hand Gestures to navigate without touching the screen.

You can assign different actions to different movements. A single tap with your fingers can act like touching the screen, while a double tap can open the Notification Center. In the Hand Gestures settings, blue Try it out text opens a guided experience with an animation for each gesture.

Once AssistiveTouch is active, a highlight appears around elements on the screen and four default gestures handle navigation. Motion Pointer adds a cursor that you control with movements of your arm. The feature can make the Apple Watch easier to use, but enabling it turns off Apple’s universal double tap gesture, which can answer calls or scroll through widgets.

Other accessibility settings may also help. Auto-Answer Calls and Show Audio Transcriptions can support HomePod announcements or Workout Buddy. Reduce Transparency can increase contrast, while Text Size can make on-screen words larger or smaller. Apple Watch Ultra users can also set different actions for the Action Button.

Apple TV Remote Shortcuts Worth Knowing

The Apple TV remote includes several controls that are easy to miss. To force-quit an app, double-press the Home/Control Center button. This opens windows showing all open apps, much like an iPhone or iPad. Use the clickpad buttons to move between the windows, select the app you want to close, and swipe upward on the center of the clickpad.

Closing a frozen app can help when it glitches, and it frees up some computational power. The same Home/Control Center button opens another useful menu when you press and hold it. The Control Center lets you change the wireless network, add Bluetooth controllers, access the smart home dashboard, and use other controls.

Audio switching is just as simple. Open Control Center, select the Audio Controls icon, and choose from the list of available speakers. The clickpad also works as a timeline controller. Press Play/Pause and slide your finger left or right to rewind or fast-forward, or draw circles on the clickpad to scrub through a video. Older Siri remotes without a clickpad offer the same control on the touch surface at the top.

Apple TV also includes VoiceOver, Apple’s audio description system, which reads menus and descriptive text aloud as you navigate. You can enable it in Accessibility settings. While typing, pressing Play/Pause switches between uppercase and lowercase text.

To change the screen saver, double-press the back button, also called the menu button on older remotes. Apple’s tvOS includes screen saver images, and it also lets people use their own pictures from the cloud, even when the television has not been idle.

When iPhone Lockdown Mode Makes Sense

Lockdown Mode makes an iPhone much more secure against spyware, but most people do not need it. Apple introduced the feature in 2022 and calls it an “extreme” layer of security for people who may be targeted by commercial spyware such as NSO’s Pegasus. Journalists, activists, and politicians are among the potential targets.

Anyone with an iPhone running iOS 16 or newer can try Lockdown Mode. It is also available on iPadOS 16 and later, watchOS 10 and newer, and macOS 13 Ventura and later. On an iPhone, open Settings, choose Privacy & Security, scroll to Lockdown Mode, select Turn On & Restart, and confirm with your passcode. The option to disable it is in the same place.

The protection comes with trade-offs. Messages blocks most kinds of attachments, and link previews stop working. Lockdown Mode restricts JavaScript in browsers, blocks FaceTime calls except from people you called recently, and disables wired connections when the device is locked. The iPhone also stops connecting automatically to unsecured wireless networks, while support for 2G and 3G networks is disabled.

You cannot install configuration profiles, and iPhone call notifications will not appear on an Apple Watch. Home invitations, Game Center, and photo sharing are also restricted. You can exclude certain contacts from messaging restrictions so family members can still send videos or documents, and you can exclude certain websites and apps.

The feature became more relevant after the 2023 Blastpass exploit used iMessage to install Pegasus spyware on Apple devices. Researchers found that devices in Lockdown Mode were completely immune to that spyware. Apple offers a 100 percent bonus on top of its regular reward through the Security Bounty program to anyone who finds a way to bypass the feature. Apple may also notify you if it believes you have been targeted.

What Fitbit HRV Readings Really Tell You

Heart rate variability, or HRV, measures the difference in time between heartbeats. It offers information about how your body responds to stress and recovery, but there is no score to beat. A Fitbit’s optical heart rate sensor estimates the time between beats, and Google calculates HRV with a method called root mean square of successive differences, or RMSSD.

The result is measured in milliseconds, not beats per minute. Fitbit uses the longest sleep period from the previous 24 hours, and that period must last more than three hours. If you did not sleep long enough or the sensor could not collect enough data, you may not see a reading.

Find the number in Google Health, formerly the Fitbit app, under Health > Vitals > Heart rate variability. The service shows daily changes, longer-term trends, and a personal range based on up to 30 days of data. Compatible devices can track basic HRV without a Google Health Premium subscription.

Google does not set one universally good Fitbit HRV reading. Age, fitness, and individual physiology all affect the number. A bad night’s sleep, a demanding workout, stress, or alcohol consumption can change it. A persistent decrease deserves more attention, especially when resting heart rate or sleep patterns change too. A lower reading alone does not mean you are getting sick, though a few demanding days may be a reason to slow down.

For context, a resting heart rate of 62 beats per minute and an HRV of 24 milliseconds are different measurements; 60 beats per minute is also a heart-rate figure, while 25ms, 20ms, and 70ms are HRV figures. Google’s Readiness score uses HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep to estimate recovery, with scores below 30 classified as low.

A 2024 study of Fitbit Charge 4 found moderate to strong agreement with reference HRV measurements, but Fitbit tended to underestimate HRV. Sensor placement and movement can affect optical readings, while an ECG measures the heart’s electrical activity directly. Comparing brands is not straightforward because Apple Health uses SDNN for standard HRV measurements on Watch 12, while Fitbit uses RMSSD.

Your Fitbit can track changes, but it cannot identify the exact cause. If those changes continue, especially when symptoms appear, talk to a health care provider.
