ChatGPT’s Ad Era Arrives as Free Access Expands

ChatGPT is entering a new phase, and the change reaches far beyond a new advertisement format. OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT Ads to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea while preparing a major shift for free and Go users: text prompts will no longer face rate limits starting next week.

The move arrives after OpenAI announced in late July that ChatGPT had reached 1 billion active users. With that audience in place, OpenAI is testing new ways to support wider access, improve model performance, and build an advertising business around the growing AI service.

Ads Move Into Five More Countries

ChatGPT Ads launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea on August 11, 2026. OpenAI had planned the expansion on May 7, 2026, after announcing the beginning of ad testing in the United States on March 26, 2026.

OpenAI published information about the ads pilot on February 9, 2026. The company is now upgrading the program with new ad styles in early testing, while more countries come online and the advertising model takes shape.

This expansion gives OpenAI new routes to make money through ads as ChatGPT serves a user base of 1 billion active users. The company is building up what the verified claims describe as a cash-printing ads business, adding commercial potential to a product that continues to expand its free access.

The advertising push also points toward a new kind of marketing. Ads designed to influence AI agents rather than human consumers are emerging as a new marketing channel, shifting attention from traditional audiences to the systems that help people make decisions and complete tasks.

Mobian, an adtech startup, is working with Time to serve “Agent Ads.” Ally Bank and the Project Management Institute have been advertised through Agent Ads, showing how this idea is already connected to named brands and organizations.

Free Text Chats Lose Their Rate Limits

On August 6, 2026, OpenAI announced that free users would receive unlimited text chats. The company also announced that it would remove limits on text-based chats for free users, with the change applying to prompts involving only text for both free and Go accounts.

That means OpenAI is making a major change to how it operates ChatGPT free and Go accounts. Users will no longer face rate limits on text prompts starting next week, opening a longer path for conversations that rely only on text.

The expansion arrives alongside a model change for those accounts. GPT-5.6 Luna will become the new default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant.

OpenAI described the move as part of a wider effort to make its latest models available to more people. “This is a concrete step toward more abundant intelligence: making our latest models more widely available, improving the usefulness and reliability of the answers people get, and letting free users keep text chats going without a rate limit,” OpenAI said.

OpenAI confirmed the new releases to Business Insider on August 7, 2026, one day after announcing the removal of text limits and the new default model.

New Models Bring a Reliability Push

The updates extend beyond free and Go accounts. OpenAI is updating GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro users, giving those accounts more focused answers and a new slider for answer depth.

OpenAI’s internal evaluation found that factual errors were 62% less common for GPT-5.6 Luna than for GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, factual errors were 68% less common than for GPT-5.5 Instant.

Those figures connect the access changes to a clear model goal: more users can keep text chats going, while the models behind those conversations aim to deliver answers with fewer factual errors. Free users receive GPT-5.6 Luna as the default, and Plus and Pro users receive GPT-5.6 Sol updates with more control over answer depth.

Now the pieces are moving together. ChatGPT Ads is entering five additional countries, Agent Ads are opening a path toward marketing aimed at AI agents, and text rate limits are leaving free and Go accounts. At the same time, OpenAI is placing newer models across its account tiers and testing how better answers, broader access, and advertising can support the next stage of ChatGPT.

The direction is clear: ChatGPT is becoming a larger platform for conversation, model access, and commercial experiments at once. The next phase will show how OpenAI’s advertising plans develop as new ad styles, new countries, and newer models reach more users.
