Google is ending its Google Assistant app on many Android devices starting September 4. This change will roll out over a few weeks. Users will no longer find Assistant on their phones or paired devices like headphones once the transition finishes.
Google has begun emailing users about this switch. The company says, “We’re writing to let you know that the Google Assistant on your mobile device is being discontinued, and Gemini – our next-generation AI-powered assistant – is now the assistant experience on Android.” This means Gemini will replace Assistant on devices that meet minimum system requirements and where Gemini is available.
The transition applies mainly to Android phones that can run Gemini. Phones running Android 9 or older with less than 2GB of RAM will keep a legacy version of Assistant. This version will still handle basic tasks but won’t get the new features Gemini offers.
What Changes for Users
After the switch, users will summon Gemini instead of Assistant. Long-pressing the power button or saying “Hey Google” will launch Gemini. Gemini performs the same tasks and understands the same commands but with more advanced AI technology. Google promises Gemini will offer a fresher and more capable assistant experience.
Paired devices like headphones that support Gemini will also be affected. However, Google Home, Google TV, and smart displays will not see changes at this stage. Cars with Google built-in will keep Assistant, but vehicles using Android Auto projected from phones will lose access.
Gemini’s New Web-Browsing Features
One of Gemini’s standout upgrades is its AI assistant called Spark. Spark can now browse the web through the Chrome browser. It uses your logged-in accounts and saved passwords to help with online tasks. For example, Spark can research flights, start booking processes, or schedule apartment viewings.
Google notes, “Spark can use your logged-in accounts and saved passwords to handle tedious web errands.” But it won’t complete payments on its own. Instead, it hands the task back to users for review and final approval. This keeps control in the user’s hands while automating the boring parts.
The new web-browsing feature is rolling out now in the US. It will reach more regions over time. Google also expanded Spark access to Google AI Pro subscribers in over 160 countries. This shows Google’s push to bring AI-powered web help to more users worldwide.
Google AI Studio, the platform behind Gemini, decided against a standalone Android app. Instead, it’s building tools like vibe coding directly into Gemini. This means developers and users will find new AI features inside the assistant itself, not in separate apps.
