How Ambient AI and Robotics Are Changing Surgery Fast

Hospitals are using new technology to change how surgeries happen. Houston Methodist found that ambient AI in operating rooms can boost surgery numbers. Their study showed a 7% rise in surgical cases. That means about 25 more surgeries each month.
The research tracked 5,417 surgeries over 16 months. They used a method called synthetic control with difference-in-differences estimation. This approach is common in economics but rare in medical studies. It helped prove that the AI itself caused the increase, not other changes in the hospital.
The ambient AI system watches the operating room with wall-mounted cameras. It uses a YOLO-based object detection model and a transformer-based event detector. The AI spots important moments during surgery. To train the AI, researchers used data from 137,517 surgeries in 315 operating rooms.
Roberta Schwartz, Houston Methodist’s chief innovation officer, said, “Claims about AI’s impact in surgery are often met with skepticism.” She added that their study used strict clinical research standards. This gave strong evidence that ambient AI improves surgical efficiency.
Robotic Surgery Gains Ground in the UK
The UK government wants robotic assistance in 90% of keyhole surgeries by 2035. This is a big goal for robotic tools in hospitals. Sasha Stamenkovic, a thoracic surgeon, showed doctors how to use the Da Vinci 5 robotic system. The demo surgery took about two hours.
The Da Vinci 5 comes from Intuitive, a US company. It works across many surgery types, including urology, gynecology, colorectal, thoracic, and general surgery. Ian Macleod was the first NHS patient to have lung cancer surgery with this robot. He was 76 years old and recovered in just 30 minutes. His earlier non-robotic keyhole surgery took much longer to heal.
Stamenkovic said, “Robotic surgery has brought you back to what surgeons wanted to do, which was to have an art form able to create something with their hands.” He also stressed the need to include robotics in surgeon training. Young surgeons learn these tools faster than older ones.
The Royal College of Surgeons of England criticized the uneven access to robotic surgery. They called it a “postcode lottery.” This means where a patient lives can decide if they get robotic surgery or not. This gap could shrink as training grows and robots spread across the UK.
AI Predicts Postoperative Infections Using Medical Records
Another study used AI to spot surgical site infections (SSSIs) after operations. The AI read electronic health records from 765,962 surgeries in 18 Danish hospitals. It found 14,018 infections (1.8%) within 30 days after surgery. This proof-of-concept showed AI can help track complications from a huge amount of data.
The study also looked at how antibiotics affected infection risk. Giving antibiotics within two hours before surgery lowered infection rates overall. The odds ratio was 0.90 with strong statistical significance. Antibiotics worked best in laparotomies, with an odds ratio of 0.65. But in arthroplasties, the effect was not significant (odds ratio 0.90, p=0.58).
About 37.3% of all procedures used prophylactic antibiotics. In arthroplasties, 94.4% had antibiotics, and in laparotomies, 54.6% did. These numbers show how antibiotic timing and surgery type can change infection risk.
Across hospitals, AI and robotics are transforming surgery. From helping surgeons work faster to predicting complications, these tools improve care. As training and technology spread, more patients will benefit from safer, faster operations.
