IMAX Labels Hide Two Very Different Production Paths

IMAX labels do not describe the same thing. “Shot with IMAX” identifies the camera and film format used to capture a movie, while “Filmed for IMAX” describes a broader production process designed around an IMAX presentation.

A movie can carry both labels, but it does not have to. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras and is also part of the “Filmed for IMAX” program. It is the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.

That distinction matters because an IMAX presentation can begin long before a finished movie reaches a theater. The camera, aspect ratio, production planning, and projection format all shape what audiences see. The label is not decorative packaging, despite the film industry’s fondness for labels that require their own explanation.

What “Shot with IMAX” Means

“Shot with IMAX” means the production used IMAX film cameras. Those cameras use a 15-perf 65mm format, with the film running horizontally through the camera and each frame spanning 15 perforations across the film.

This format creates an image with a 1.43:1 aspect ratio. The camera film is 65mm, while theatrical release prints are 70mm, so seeing a movie projected from an IMAX 70mm print requires a theater equipped for that format.

That requirement separates the capture format from the presentation format. A movie may use IMAX film cameras during production, but the theater still needs the right equipment to project an IMAX 70mm print. Without that setup, the audience is not seeing the film through every part of that chain.

F1: The Movie was shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras and presented entirely in the 1.90:1 aspect ratio, while Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning used certified cameras with some sequences expanded to 1.90:1 for over 45 minutes.

The difference is simple once the terms are separated: “Shot with IMAX” describes the use of IMAX film cameras, while “Filmed for IMAX” covers the production decisions made for an IMAX presentation. One identifies the capture tool; the other includes the process around it.

The final viewing experience can still vary because the presentation format in IMAX theaters is not fixed across every movie or venue. The screen may show a 1.43:1 or 1.90:1 image, and an IMAX 70mm presentation requires a theater equipped for that format.

So the labels answer different questions. “Shot with IMAX” asks how the movie was captured. “Filmed for IMAX” asks whether the production was built around the requirements of an IMAX presentation — a distinction that becomes visible only when the movie reaches the screen.
