A 2012 study found the clock’s mechanics almost untouched and still original. Restoration from 2012 to 2014 revived its function. But water damage and a ceiling collapse have sidelined it since. The bell hammer was disconnected for safety, silencing its chime.

Manx National Heritage’s conservation team finished drying and repairing the tower in 2025. Now, the clock faces specialized conservation. Repairs will include worn pivots and bushes, testing on a full-scale rig, restoring the chime, and redesigning the rope system.

The Cumbria Clock Company, which restored Big Ben between 2017 and 2019, handles the restoration. Chris Weeks, conservator for Manx National Heritage, calls the clock “an extraordinarily rare survival and one of the Isle of Man’s most significant historic objects.”
