Meta’s Subscription Push and Forum Launch Shake Up Social Media Landscape
Meta is doubling down on subscriptions across its flagship apps. Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus now offer monthly plans globally. These packages deliver extras like profile customization, story insights, and super reactions for a modest fee.
Instagram Plus costs $3.99 per month. It unlocks seven new features including anonymous story viewing, story rewatch analytics, and unlimited custom audience lists. Subscribers can spotlight stories weekly, extend story duration, and post without alerting followers. These tools blur the line between casual users and creators.
Facebook Plus mirrors Instagram’s social expression perks, while WhatsApp Plus focuses on personalization—custom ringtones, app themes, and extra pinned chats. Meta keeps these subscription tiers distinct from Meta Verified, its premium verification service that offers blue checks and impersonation protection.
Meta is also testing “Meta One” plans for businesses, creators, and AI users. Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium, priced at $7.99 and $19.99 monthly, grant deeper AI capabilities like complex reasoning and advanced video/image generation. Casual AI use remains free, but heavy users will pay for more compute power.
This subscription surge marks Meta’s effort to diversify revenue beyond advertising. Growth in user numbers is flat or declining, so squeezing more value from existing audiences makes sense. The company plans to add more features and expand these offerings soon.
Forum App: Meta’s Reddit Rival with AI Tools
Meta quietly launched Forum, a standalone app repurposing Facebook Groups into a Reddit-style discussion platform. Forum targets users craving focused community conversations, niche interests, and public discourse. It arrived without fanfare but sent Reddit’s stock tumbling nearly 6 percent.
Forum requires a Facebook login but allows nicknames, offering privacy while keeping admins aware of real identities. The app syncs posts with Facebook Groups, bridging old and new experiences. Users get personalized feeds and AI-powered search that summarizes group discussions.
Admins receive AI moderation tools to manage communities better. The “Ask” feature pulls answers from multiple groups, mimicking Google’s AI Overviews. Forum revives Meta’s 2014 attempt at a Groups app but leans heavily on AI to stand out this time.
Forum’s launch comes amid Meta’s broader push to build many specialized apps using AI. The company hopes to capture users disillusioned by Facebook’s aging image and compete directly with Reddit, a major source of human-curated knowledge and conversation.
Meta’s Massive AI Investment and Market Expectations
Behind the scenes, Meta is spending between $125 billion and $145 billion on AI infrastructure this year. The increased budget covers data centers, servers, and network gear essential for training massive AI models. Executives expect AI to generate more than $26 billion in new revenue by 2027.
This colossal investment unsettled investors, causing Meta’s shares to drop after the announcement. CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains confident, emphasizing that Meta builds products at scale before monetizing them. CFO Susan Li hinted that AI spending could slow if capacity outpaces demand.
Analysts see potential revenue from AI-driven ads, subscriptions, and commerce tools. Still, returns remains uncertain. Meta’s rivals like Google and Microsoft monetize AI through cloud services, while Meta bets on AI-enhanced ads and consumer apps. The gamble is big, and the payoff timeline is unclear.
Meanwhile, Meta’s user base faces fatigue. The company reported a loss of 20 million daily active users across its apps in early 2026. New launches like Threads and Instants show promise but struggle to match the scale or engagement of legacy platforms.
Meta’s current strategy mixes subscription fees, AI innovation, and niche apps to revive growth and fend off competitors. It’s a high-stakes game where billions flow out before profits follow. For users, that means a more segmented, pay-to-play social media future with AI woven into every layer.
