New $42M Boost for Open-Source AI and Global Standards

The Sentient Foundation has unveiled a $42 million program to back open-source artificial general intelligence projects. The fund is both a grant and an investment program. It mixes non-dilutive grants with startup investments to support projects at various development stages.
The $42 million number is no accident. It nods to the famous fictional answer to “life, the universe, and everything.” The foundation wants to build a sustainable economic base for open-source AGI. That means helping projects grow without losing their open roots.
The program covers several projects, including ROMA, Open Deep Search, EvoSkills, Arena, and the OML family of models. Teams applying must keep at least one critical part of their work open to the public. This rule ensures the technology remains accessible.
Sentient Foundation’s Director of Venture and Growth, Sachi Kamiya, said, “The future of intelligence should be built by the many, not controlled by the few.” The program also plans long-term governance with an advisory council to guide the ecosystem.
New Fellowship Aims for Open-Source AI Standards
At the same time, the Open Source Initiative (OSI) started a two-year research fellowship during UN Open Source Week in New York. The fellowship works with Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy. Its goal is to build international agreement on technical requirements for open-source AI models.
The first research will look at Google’s Gemma 4 family of models. They will be evaluated against the Open Source AI Definition (OSAID). Gabriel Toscano from Duke University is the inaugural fellow leading this work.
The fellowship will hold an introductory meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina. Later, it will share its findings at the Open Technology Research Symposium in Barcelona. This effort hopes to set clear, shared standards for open-source AI worldwide.
OpenAI and Industry Unite for AI Governance
OpenAI recently co-founded the Appia Foundation. This group aims to create shared standards and a trust layer for assessing and governing AI. The Linux Foundation hosts Appia, and OpenAI is one of its main backers.
In a related move, the AGI Conference is set for July 27-30, 2026, in San Francisco. SingularityNET is sponsoring the event and helping spread the word. The conference will gather experts to discuss the future of artificial general intelligence.
Other organizations are pushing AI governance too. The FINOS AI Fund includes founding members like The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Canada, and NatWest. Gabriele Columbro, FINOS Executive Director, said, “The FINOS AI Fund is about moving from exploration to measurable outcomes.”
Morgan Stanley’s Madhu Coimbatore noted, “We actively leverage the FINOS AI Governance Framework in new vendor onboarding. We encourage AI, risk, and engineering leaders across the industry to do the same,” ensuring consistent AI governance across companies.
Johnna Powell from DTCC added, “By aligning the industry around practical standards that can be implemented at scale, we can help make agentic AI adoption more responsible and grounded in the realities of regulated financial services.”
Bhupesh Vora from Royal Bank of Canada said, “As agentic AI moves from pilot to production, the decisions the industry makes now will determine how safely and sustainably it scales.” These voices highlight the importance of responsible AI governance as technology advances.
Across these efforts, the message is clear. Open-source AI needs strong support, clear standards, and shared governance. The $42 million Sentient Foundation initiative, the OSI fellowship, and the Appia Foundation all push toward this goal. Together, they aim to build a future where AI grows openly and safely for everyone.
