Sony Japan is putting new conditions on PS5 Pro purchases in Japan as limited supply meets strong demand. Buyers will need to show that they actually use a PlayStation system before they can qualify to purchase the console.
The process requires a Sony account registered in Japan, and applicants must use that account to buy the PS5 Pro. They must also remain signed into the account and have played at least 60 hours on a PS5, a PS4, or both.
Playtime Becomes Part of the Purchase Process
Sony will count playtime recorded between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026. That means the purchase process is tied to a two-year period of activity rather than a simple request made at checkout.
Applicants who meet the conditions and receive approval will be able to buy a unit from October 26 through November 2. The dates connected to the announcement include September 28, 2026, September 30, 2026, and October 7, while the approved purchase window runs from October 26 to November 2.
The system will not guarantee a console for every eligible applicant. If Sony receives more applications than the number of PS5 Pro units in stock, it will use a lottery to decide who can buy one.
That approach adds another step, but it gives Sony a way to manage demand when supply cannot cover every request. It also links access to a record of play rather than leaving the entire process open to anyone who wants to purchase a console.
Short Supply Meets Demand for the PS5 Pro
The purchase rules are arriving as the PS5 Pro faces stock shortages outside Japan too. In the United States, major retailers have had the console unavailable for a while because of limited stock.
Sony is dealing with component supply constraints, and the company believes those problems will continue through early 2027. That puts pressure on the supply of PS5 Pro units even as interest in the console remains high.
The PS5 Pro already costs $150 more than the standard PS5, but the higher price has not removed demand. Interest has grown since GTA VI was officially announced, giving the console another reason to attract buyers who want higher performance from future games.
GTA VI is PS5 Pro Enhanced, which means the game can use the console’s more advanced hardware for better performance and graphics. That connection gives the PS5 Pro a clear role for players who want the strongest version of the game on PlayStation.
What the Lottery Could Change
Sony’s requirements may help prevent scalpers from getting units to resell. Scalpers often target limited-stock products, and a purchase process based on account activity makes the PS5 Pro harder to obtain through a simple rush to a retailer.
The rules may also stop foreigners from buying units in Japan during a visit. Because buyers need a Sony account registered in Japan and must use that account for the purchase, a short trip does not meet the stated conditions by itself.
That does not remove the shortage, and it does not create more consoles. The lottery only decides how available units will be allocated when demand exceeds stock. Still, the playtime requirement and Japan-registered account give Sony a way to focus the offer on people with an established connection to its PlayStation systems.
