Future of Work

Tech Workers Fight Back for Job Security and Fair Deals

The tech world is shaking. Workers at Google and Xbox are standing up, demanding real job security and fair treatment. The scene is electric with energy as these tech giants face protests and petitions. These workers aren’t backing down—they want change now.

Google Workers Push for Stronger Protections

On July 17, 2026, about 100 Google employees gathered outside the Mountain View headquarters. They came with a clear message and a powerful petition. More than 4,500 Google staff signed this petition, demanding protections that would stop layoffs from wiping out livelihoods without warning.

The Alphabet Workers Union delivered the petition directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and three senior leaders. This wasn’t a casual ask—they laid down four specific demands:

  • Guaranteed severance packages at least equal to those from January 2023.
  • Voluntary exit packages offered before any layoffs start.
  • Ending the forced-distribution performance ratings.
  • Extended paid leave for visa workers during severance periods.

Parul Koul, a Google engineer and president of the union, said it loud and clear: “We are demanding that Google workers have the conditions and the security to do their best work.”

Google’s layoff saga started in early 2023 with about 12,000 jobs cut. Since then, smaller waves of job trimming have continued. To counter that, Google has offered voluntary exit packages to over 70,000 staff across multiple divisions since the union campaign began.

More than 1,000 Googlers have joined visibility actions, showing they are ready to stand up for their future. This movement is growing, and the message is clear—workers want fairness and stability.

Xbox Workers Rally Amid Massive Layoffs

The pressure isn’t just on Google. Microsoft shook the gaming world on July 6, 2026, announcing immediate layoffs affecting 1,600 Xbox employees. Plans call for another 1,600 jobs to be cut over the next fiscal year. Beyond Xbox, Microsoft cut an additional 3,200 jobs in other areas.

Microsoft also sold off four Xbox studios: Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs. Rumors say the company is considering shutting down Arkane, another major studio.

Xbox employees reacted fast. On July 15, 2026, workers protested layoffs across six studio locations in the US and Canada. They demanded transparency and good faith negotiations before any cuts. These voices are led by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the union representing 3,500 video game industry workers.

CWA Canada specifically represents Bethesda workers in Montreal. Simon Prefontaine, a union organizer and former Bethesda employee, explained the legal fight underway: “Our lawyers in the USA and Canada find these layoffs to be illegal and are therefore filling unfair labor practice actions against Microsoft on both sides of the border.”

Frank Arace, CWA District 9 Vice President, spoke with force: “We’re here to say this plainly: Those workers will not be treated as disposable.” The union is fighting to hold Microsoft accountable and protect these creative professionals from being tossed aside.

The Battle for Fair Treatment Is Just Beginning

Tech workers are no longer silent. They are demanding respect, job security, and fair bargaining power. At Google, thousands have signed a petition calling for stronger severance and better exit options. At Xbox, employees and unions are filing legal challenges and taking to the streets.

These actions show a tech workforce ready to shape its future. They want to know their jobs won’t vanish overnight. They want conditions that let them thrive without fear.

The story is unfolding in real time. Will these protests and petitions force Google and Microsoft to change course? Workers have made their demands clear. Now the big question: will the tech giants listen?
