TikTok Restores Musk Documentary Ad Account After Political Content Dispute

TikTok banned advertising for the nearly four-hour documentary about Elon Musk just before the film reached more US theaters, creating another obstacle for a release already facing problems across major platforms. The platform permanently suspended the documentary’s promotional advertising account on October 17, 2026, then restored it the next day after an error.

TikTok attributed the ban to “political content that goes against its policy.” The decision came as Musk, directed by Alex Gibney and distributed by Bleecker Street, moved from a limited opening into a broader theatrical rollout.

A Ban During the Film’s Wider Release

The documentary opened on October 9 at four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. After that opening weekend, showings expanded across many more US theaters on October 16, putting the TikTok advertising account suspension just ahead of the film’s wider distribution.

The opening brought in around $70,000 during its first weekend. Bleecker Street told THR it would appeal TikTok’s decision and try to get the account restored, a move that became unnecessary one day later when the platform reversed the suspension.

“I can confirm that the advertising account has been restored after an error,” said Mahsau Cullinane.

The reversal does not erase the timing of the dispute. A promotional account tied to the film was suspended as the distributor sought to support a release that was moving from four theaters into a much larger US run.

Meta, YouTube and X Took Different Paths

TikTok was not the only major platform to raise questions about ads for Musk. The documentary also faced promotional ad issues with Meta and YouTube, though both platforms later allowed trailer ads to run.

Meta rejected ads for the documentary and blamed the decision on “an error.” YouTube also blocked promotional material before posting a statement that it had been “cleared to run” ads for the film.

X took a different position. The platform, which is owned by Elon Musk, has refused to run ads for the documentary. That leaves the film navigating different rules on platforms connected to the people and companies involved in its release.

The situation also carries a political angle because TikTok’s US operations are partly owned by Larry Ellison, who has been a notable supporter of President Donald Trump. TikTok’s stated reason for the suspension focused on political content and a policy violation, while the advertising account was later restored after the platform described the problem as an error.

The Film’s Release Still Moves Forward

Despite the ad disputes, Musk is now rolling out more broadly after its opening in four theaters. Alex Gibney directed the documentary, Bleecker Street handles its distribution, and Universal serves as its international distributor.

The film is also scheduled to stream on HBO next year. HBO is part of Paramount/Skydance, which is led by David Ellison, Larry Ellison’s son.

That future streaming arrangement adds another connection to the business network surrounding the film, but the immediate issue remains its theatrical promotion. Bleecker Street wanted to advertise the documentary ahead of its wider US release, while TikTok first suspended and then restored the account tied to that campaign.

For viewers, the result is a release surrounded by platform decisions that do not line up. Meta cited an error, YouTube said the ads had been cleared to run, X refused the ads, and TikTok pointed to political content before reversing its suspension after another error.

The documentary’s distribution now continues across theaters, with its HBO streaming release set for next year. Its path to audiences has included a limited opening, a wider rollout, and a series of advertising disputes across platforms tied to some of the most visible names in technology and media.
