Volvo’s 2028 plug-in hybrids are getting a serious battery upgrade. The XC60 and XC90 T8 now offer more than double their real-world electric range, along with new features that make the larger battery pack more useful.
Volvo announced the upgrades on Sep 15, 2026, covering both the 2028 XC60 and XC90 plug-in refresh. Each vehicle receives a 41.2 kWh gross battery with 37.9 kWh usable capacity, giving the SUVs a much larger electric reserve before their gas engines need to join the conversation.
The XC60 T8 posts an electric driving range of 78 miles, or 125 km, under the Environmental Protection Agency test cycle. The XC90 T8 reaches 73 miles, or 117 km, on electric power — a small difference between the two SUVs despite their different sizes.
A battery upgrade aimed at daily driving
Volvo’s figures put both vehicles well beyond the 22-mile, or 35 km, median US Volvo driver commute. That means the battery capacity covers the stated median commute with room left over, assuming the vehicle starts with a full charge and conditions match the test cycle.
The battery cells sit in the floor of both vehicles. Volvo says this integration improves efficiency, while the increased capacity gives the plug-in powertrain more room to operate as an electric vehicle instead of treating electric driving like a brief opening act.
The combined range reaches 590 miles, or 949 km, with a full battery and gas tank. That keeps the XC60 T8 and XC90 T8 positioned as plug-in hybrids rather than electric-only vehicles, but the expanded electric range changes how often their gas engines need to work during ordinary driving.
New features arrive with the powertrain refresh
The refreshed vehicles also add Google’s Gemini chatbot as a voice assistant integrated into the vehicles. The announcement provides no further details about the feature, but its inclusion adds an AI assistant to a refresh built around a larger battery and longer electric driving range.
Håkan Samuelsson, president & CEO at Volvo Cars, connected the update to the company’s established SUV lineup: “The XC60 is our bestselling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey.” The battery upgrade gives both models a clearer reason to remain in Volvo’s plug-in hybrid range as the company updates its most important SUVs.
Production on the XC60 and XC90 begins in late Fall 2026. Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2027, so the new range figures will reach drivers before the 2028 model year becomes old news.
The result is a focused refresh rather than a token specification bump: 37.9 kWh of usable battery capacity, up to 78 miles of EPA electric range, and a total range of 590 miles with a full battery and gas tank. Bigger batteries do not make a plug-in hybrid an electric vehicle, but these numbers make the distinction less important during everyday driving.
