Digit 5 Targets Safer Humanoid Robot Work at Industrial Scale

Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5 on September 15, 2026, introducing the fifth generation of its general-purpose humanoid robot. The company describes Digit 5 as its first humanoid engineered for cooperatively safe work at scale, with a design focused on operating alongside people in industrial environments.

The launch comes as Agility Robotics reports more than $300 million in multi-year customer orders as of May 2026. That figure gives Digit 5 a clear commercial setting: the robot is being presented not only as a technical upgrade, but as a system built for industrial deployments that involve repeated work around human employees.

A Safety System Built Around Human Awareness

Digit 5’s safety architecture is designed to reduce dependence on the protective barriers typical of traditional robotic automation. Instead of separating the robot from nearby workers with fixed barriers, the system continuously monitors for people using proprietary AI algorithms and multiple sensor technologies.

When Digit 5 detects a person within an unsafe distance, it can respond in three ways: avoiding the person, stopping, or assuming a seated position. Visual and auditory cues also convey the robot’s motion intent and alert nearby people, giving workers information about what the machine is doing.

An independent safety controller supervises Digit 5’s response whenever someone is detected within an unsafe distance. This controller adds a separate layer to the robot’s response system, while the robot’s AI algorithms and sensors monitor the surrounding area.

Digit 5 previously became the first humanoid to pass an independent field evaluation on a customer production line for industrial safety standards administered by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, known as OSHA. That evaluation is part of the safety foundation Agility Robotics is bringing into the new generation.

“Digit 5 is removing a major barrier to scaling humanoid robots in industrial environments,” said Peggy Johnson, CEO of Agility Robotics.

More Lifting, Longer Work Cycles

Digit 5 delivers 40% more payload through a new leg design engineered to withstand repetitive lifting. The robot can repeatedly lift loads up to 50 lb (22.7 kg), giving the new design a clear focus on repeated industrial handling rather than one-time demonstrations.

The robot also uses a new 90-minute runtime battery that charges in 9 minutes. Agility Robotics says this setup enables more than 20 hours of productive work in a 24-hour day, combining repeated work periods with short charging intervals.

Those specifications place the battery and lifting system at the center of Digit 5’s operating model. The robot is designed to return to work after a 9-minute charge, while its legs support repeated lifting of loads up to 50 lb (22.7 kg).

Digit 5 weighs 284 lb (129 kg) and stands 5 feet 11 inches (1.81 m) tall. It reaches heights of up to 7. These dimensions define the physical scale of a machine intended to perform general-purpose work in industrial settings.

NVIDIA Partnership Adds Another Layer

Agility Robotics is the first launch partner for NVIDIA’s Halos for Robotics platform. The partnership connects Digit 5’s safety architecture with a platform from NVIDIA, while Deepu Talla, vice president of robotics and edge AI at NVIDIA, described safe operation around people and assets as the step that moves humanoid robots beyond pilot programs.

“Safely operating around people and assets is what moves humanoid robots from pilots to industrial deployments at scale,” said Talla.

That idea runs through Digit 5’s design. The robot combines people detection, motion responses, visual and auditory cues, an independent safety controller, repetitive lifting capacity, and a battery that charges in 9 minutes. Each feature supports the same goal: work around people without relying on the protective barriers used in traditional robotic automation.

Agility Robotics is positioning Digit 5 as a general-purpose humanoid with the physical capacity and safety systems needed for industrial work. Its 40% payload increase, ability to lift up to 50 lb (22.7 kg), and more than 20 hours of productive work in a 24-hour day provide the operating figures behind that position.

With more than $300 million in multi-year customer orders reported as of May 2026, the company is taking that position into a market where safety remains central to deployment.
