AI Forces Colleges to Rethink Cybersecurity and Student Trust

Colleges and universities once looked safer than many school systems. Their campuses already had mature IT departments, budgets for security tools, and years of experience running digital systems and online learning before COVID arrived. That advantage is now under pressure as cybercriminals move up-market and place higher education squarely in their sights.

The shift began after the pandemic forced remote learning overnight. School systems that had never planned for that change were left exposed, giving attackers an easier path into education networks. The low-hanging fruit at the K-12 level has largely been picked, and attackers are now turning toward colleges and universities with the same AI-driven tools that made K-12 such an easy target.

Identity Has Become the Main Battleground

Firewalls and perimeter tools still matter, but they were never built to stop AI systems that impersonate staff and students at scale. These attacks can look convincing enough to slip past checks institutions have relied on for years, turning stolen usernames, passwords, and other account details into a direct route through campus systems.

Credential theft and account takeover are no longer edge cases. They are the primary attack surface, and defending that surface has become the central cybersecurity challenge in higher education for 2026. A breach that hit Glendale Community College, Moody Bible Institute, Illinois Central College, and Houston City College exposed personal information from at least 137,000 school staff accounts.

Staff credentials get most of the attention, but they are only half the story. The other half is happening on the student side, where ghost student fraud is creating a costly problem for schools, financial aid programs, and the people whose identities criminals use.

Fake Students, Real Debt

Ghost student fraud involves bad actors using fake or stolen identities to enroll as students without any plan to attend classes. Their goal is to collect financial aid, and AI-generated applications are now good enough to beat the identity checks that many institutions still use.

That makes the fraud scale in the same way credential theft does: automatically and fast. Community colleges across Southern California are being flooded with AI-generated applications, and the pattern is showing up nationwide. Community colleges face added pressure because they typically run the least robust identity infrastructure.

The numbers show how large the problem has become. An estimated $150 million in aid went to ineligible students in 2025 alone. The federal government has over $350 million in ghost student fraud under investigation across 200 open cases, while Delaware County Community College uncovered more than 500 fake student accounts on its own.

The damage does not stop with the school or the government. When a scammer enrolls under a stolen identity and collects a loan, the real person behind that identity is often left holding the debt. Legitimate students also end up competing for shrinking financial aid pools and institutional resources that fraud has already siphoned off.

AI Is Also Moving Into the Classroom

The same technology creating new security problems is becoming part of everyday teaching. Cheshire Academy, a private boarding and day school in Connecticut, has about 400 students in grades 9 through 12. Most instructors there use AI in some way, according to librarian and technology coordinator George Aiello.

Staff training at Cheshire Academy covered how to craft useful prompts and warned that AI can generate incorrect and biased responses. Teachers often use generative AI to prepare class materials, including lesson plans and grading rubrics. Many also use general-purpose tools from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI for administrative tasks.

That use has clear limits. AI can help teachers brainstorm lesson plans and create extra problem sets, but using it for final drafts can cause confusion and impair learning because of hallucinations. Not every teacher feels comfortable using large language models to generate text that students will read, with effectiveness and accuracy among the main concerns.

Some teachers also want AI to provide feedback to students, but concerns about quality, personalization, and privacy have prevented that use from moving forward. The question is not only whether a tool can produce an answer. It is whether the answer fits the student, protects personal information, and supports learning instead of replacing it.

Teaching Students How to Use AI

Miriam Przybyla-Baum, a French teacher at Cheshire Academy, developed a system that asks students to reflect on how AI can and cannot teach language skills. The approach treats AI as something students should examine, not simply accept.

The school is also piloting a “Student AI Council,” where students create media and lead discussions about healthy AI use. Cheshire Academy has adopted traffic light labels on assignments to show when AI use is allowed, restricted, or not permitted.

Teachers are also previewing MagicSchool, an AI-powered platform that can generate questions, assignments, grading rubrics, presentations, lesson plans, and administrative reports. Higher education now faces both sides of the AI problem at once. Attackers use it to impersonate users and create fake students, while educators use it to plan lessons and manage routine work. The challenge for colleges is building identity defenses strong enough to stop fraud without blocking useful classroom tools, then teaching students and staff where AI helps and where human judgment must remain in charge.
