Apple Launches Game-Changing Device Subscription Program

Apple just flipped the script on how you get your hands on their devices. No more big upfront payments. Now, there’s a slick subscription program that lets you lease your favorite Apple gear. Want to upgrade to the latest model? Keep your current device? Or simply return it? The choice is yours.
Meet Apple Upgrade. It’s Apple’s new subscription program designed to put flexibility and affordability front and center. Instead of buying outright, you pay a monthly fee and enjoy a fresh way to access iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs. This program officially launched on July 28, 2026, and it’s making waves.
How Apple Upgrade Works
The system is straightforward. You pick the device you want and pay a monthly lease fee instead of a lump sum. The prices start at just $18 a month for an iPhone, $12 for an Apple Watch or iPad, and $25 for a Mac. That’s a big deal for anyone who wants Apple’s latest tech without the sticker shock.
Leases run for different terms depending on the device:
- 12 or 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches
- 24 or 36 months for iPads and Macs
When the lease period ends, you have three options. You can upgrade to a newer model, buy the device outright, or simply return it. Want to pay off your device early? You can do that too, but there are extra fees involved if you upgrade, keep, or terminate the lease early.
This program replaces Apple’s old iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments plans in the US. If you’re already in the iPhone Upgrade Program, you can switch over to Apple Upgrade once you’re eligible. Or you can choose to pay via Apple Card Monthly Installments, buy outright, or use carrier financing instead.
Behind the Scenes: Klarna Powers the Lease
Apple teamed up with Klarna to bring this subscription model to life. Klarna’s platform handles approvals and payments. You’ll need to get approved by Klarna to participate. Plus, they offer a dedicated app where you can track your payments and lease details. It’s a seamless way to manage your subscription without surprises.
The timing is interesting. Apple was thinking about something similar as recently as 2024 but scrapped it due to concerns about financial oversight. Now, with Klarna onboard and buy now, pay later already part of Apple Pay since 2024, Apple Upgrade is ready to roll.
AppleCare One Expands Globally
While the subscription program gets the spotlight, AppleCare One is making big moves too. This insurance service covers multiple devices with theft and loss protection. It launched in the US earlier and expanded to the UK, France, Germany, and Australia on July 27, 2026. It officially arrives in those regions on August 4th.
AppleCare One pricing varies by region:
- UK: £16.99/month for three devices, plus £4.99/month for each additional device
- France: €20.99/month for three devices, plus €5.99/month per extra device
- US: $20/month for three devices, plus $6/month for each more
This plan offers the same coverage as AppleCare+ but adds theft and loss protection. It includes fast repairs for accidental damage, battery replacements, and 24/7 priority access to Apple experts. It covers iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches that are less than four years old and in good condition.
AppleCare+ is also enhancing its theft and loss coverage in the UK. Now iPads and Apple Watches can get up to two incidents of loss or theft covered each year. Plus, prices for base models with theft and loss start at £4.99/month for iPads and £9.49/month for the iPhone 17.
Existing AppleCare+ customers can upgrade to AppleCare One, with their plans transferring automatically. You can also swap devices in and out of your plan anytime. This flexibility matches the spirit of Apple Upgrade’s new leasing program.
What This Means for Apple Fans
Apple Upgrade opens a new door. It lowers the barrier to entry for Apple devices. It lets users stay current without dumping huge sums upfront. It also creates a cycle where you can easily refresh your tech or opt out if you want.
Combined with AppleCare One’s expanded protection, Apple is building an ecosystem that’s more accessible and supportive for users everywhere. Keep an eye out as prices for iPads, Macs, and upcoming iPhones keep climbing. Subscription and insurance options could be the smart way to stay ahead.
The future of owning Apple devices just got a lot more flexible. Are you ready to upgrade your Apple experience?
