Apple’s Siri AI to Offer Paid Upgrades Through iCloud Plus

Apple is planning a new way to use Siri AI that could include a paywall for heavy users. The company wants to offer upgrades through iCloud+ subscriptions. This means if you want more from Siri AI, you might pay for extra access.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, talked about this during his final earnings call on July 31, 2026. He said, “We do believe there will be people that want to use [Siri AI] a lot, and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud+, where people can buy up the stack on iCloud+, and we’ll see how the pickup for that is.”

This approach is similar to what other AI providers do. Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic offer free versions with limits. Then users can pay to unlock more features or higher usage. Apple is following this trend but linking it to its existing iCloud+ service.

The Siri AI upgrade is already in the iOS 27 beta. Apple plans a wider release this fall. However, the AI features have daily usage limits. This is because they rely on powerful servers to handle complex requests like image generation.

Apple’s Hybrid AI Strategy and Cloud Partnerships

Apple uses a hybrid AI system. Some AI tasks run directly on iPhones and Macs using Apple chips. Tim Cook calls this “a competitive weapon” because it keeps data on devices and reduces cloud costs.

For more demanding tasks like image generation, Apple uses Google Cloud. This setup relies on Nvidia GPUs and Intel CPUs. It helps Apple manage the heavy lifting in the cloud while keeping other AI work on devices.

In China, Apple is rolling out AI features too. This comes after partnerships with Alibaba and Baidu and regulatory approval. Initial tools include a photo-editing app called Clean Up. Full Siri AI integration there will take longer, Cook said.

Services Growth and Monetization Opportunities

Apple’s services business is huge. The company earned $30.74 billion in services revenue for the June quarter ending June 27, 2026. This includes subscriptions like iCloud+, Apple TV, and Apple One. Apple now has over 1.5 billion subscribers, up from 1 billion earlier this year.

Despite this growth, the services revenue missed expectations. A slowdown in mobile gaming and changes in the App Store business model hurt revenue. A court ruling now allows some app developers to process payments outside the App Store, cutting into Apple’s fees.

Apple is expanding services in other ways too. It launched Creator Studio subscriptions and bill-splitting in Apple Cash. Also, the Apple Upgrade program with Klarna could boost services revenue further. AI features like Siri AI upgrades tied to iCloud+ could open new monetization doors.

Apple’s spending on AI is smaller than rivals. The company spent $2.46 billion on capital expenditures in the June quarter, far less than giants like Microsoft or Amazon. Still, Apple believes its hybrid AI approach will save money by reducing cloud token costs and keeping intellectual property secure.

Apple also recently paid $250 million to settle a class action lawsuit over how it marketed AI features in the iPhone 16. This shows the company is under pressure to manage expectations around AI carefully.

Overall, Apple sees “enormous opportunities” in AI. Siri AI upgrades could become a key selling point for iCloud subscriptions. The company is at the beginning of this AI rollout and will adapt as users respond.
