Apple’s Siri AI Upgrade Cuts Deep but Leaves Many Behind

Apple just announced a major Siri AI upgrade coming in iOS 27. It’s a big leap—but only for a select few devices.
The new Siri AI will debut in beta this July 2026, with a full public launch expected September 14. This overhaul promises real conversations, better speech recognition, and smarter app actions.
Here’s the catch: only iPhones from the 15 Pro onward get the full AI experience. That includes the 2024 iPad mini, thanks to its shared processor. Macs and other iPads with Apple silicon will also qualify.
Older devices running iOS 27—back to the iPhone 11—miss out on AI features but still see visual and performance improvements. App launch times jump up to 30% faster, and photo libraries load 70% quicker.
Apple plans to boost RAM on non-Pro iPhones to 9GB, but its AI models demand at least 12GB. That effectively locks out most standard iPhones from powerful AI functions. The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and rumored iPhone Fold will carry the full AI load.
Siri AI will search Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, and Calendar, and execute commands inside apps. Users will likely have to opt in manually to access the beta assistant.
Europeans get the short end. Siri AI won’t work on iPhones or iPads at launch in the EU. Apple blames the Digital Markets Act, which restricts deep device access needed for rival AI assistants.
Apple’s marketing chief called this “the most serious negative outcome yet” of the EU’s regulation. Talks are ongoing, with some consumer complaints stirring.
iOS 27 also brings AI-driven tab grouping in Safari, photo editing tools, and context-aware suggestions in Messages, Mail, and Calendar. Maps and Wallet get smarter too. Parental controls gain real-time app usage visibility and new safety filters.
This selective rollout looks like a push to drive device upgrades and lock users deeper into Apple’s AI ecosystem. Over half of active iPhones won’t see these new AI features at all.
The future of Siri AI is shiny but exclusive. If you’re not on the latest hardware, the upgrade will mostly feel like a speed boost and minor polish—not the AI revolution Apple is selling.
