Better Headphones Without the AirPods Max Price

AirPods Max costs $549. That price buys Apple’s premium over-ear option, but it also leaves plenty of room for alternatives that cost less and offer different trade-offs. Billy Steele’s October 2, 2026 article lays out several choices, while his September 28, 2026 article covers more affordable options for Apple’s AirPods Pro 3.
“If you’re willing to pay for them, there’s a lot to like about the AirPods Max,” Steele wrote. Fair enough—but liking a product does not make $549 easier to justify, especially when competing headphones cover the same broad category at lower prices.
Over-Ear Alternatives Cost Less
Anker’s Soundcore Space 2 Pro costs $200, putting it far below the AirPods Max. Steele describes the gap plainly: “The Space 2 Pro will cost you less than half of a pair of the AirPods Max 2.” That leaves the Space 2 Pro as the most direct lower-cost choice in this group.
Bose’s QuietComfort Headphones (2nd gen) cost $359. Steele says, “The QuietComfort Headphones are no slouch, and you’ll be plenty pleased with the performance after saving nearly $200 over the AirPods Max 2.” The saving is substantial without dropping into the budget end of the market.
Apple’s Beats 360 brings a different advantage: battery life. “The Beats 360 lasts for up to 12 hours longer than the AirPods Max 2,” Steele wrote. Battery endurance will not erase the price of the AirPods Max, but twelve extra hours gives the Beats model a clear point in its favor.
Audio-Technica’s ATH-M20xBT costs under $100, making it the cheapest over-ear option listed here. That price comes with a warning from Steele: “If you want a good set of headphones for under $100, you have to make a lot of sacrifices.” Cheap audio is available. Free compromises are not.
AirPods Pro Alternatives From $55
Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 cost $249. Steele calls them “a pricey choice at $249,” while pointing to options that combine sound quality, active noise cancellation, and useful features at lower prices. The alternatives range from a discounted Bose model to earbuds that cost less than one quarter of the AirPods Pro 3.
Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds (2024) originally cost $179, but Bose dropped the price to $149 for all seven colors earlier this year. That gives them a $100 advantage over the AirPods Pro 3, with active noise cancellation included among the features Steele highlights for the alternatives.
Bose also offers second-generation QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds for $249—the same price as the AirPods Pro 3. Steele says that model delivers even better performance than the 2024 QuietComfort Earbuds, but the price removes the obvious savings. Spending less is not the only goal; sometimes the cheaper model is the sensible one.
The Anker Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro costs $170, while Apple’s Beats Powerbeats Fit are currently available for $170. Valentina Palladino calls the Powerbeats Fit “a fitting update to the Beats Fit Pro” and says the earlier model was one of the best devices in the Beats lineup, with the latest version improving that formula.
The lowest price belongs to Anker’s Soundcore Space A40 at $55. “At just $55, the Space A40 is the cheapest option on our list of AirPods Pro 3 alternatives,” Jeff Dunn wrote. That price makes the Space A40 the clearest choice for shoppers who want to spend as little as possible.
Sony’s WF-C710N is priced at $130 but available at $88, creating another sizeable gap below the AirPods Pro 3. Sony’s LinkBuds Fit costs $198, placing it closer to Apple’s price while still remaining below the $249 AirPods Pro 3.
The pattern is simple: Apple offers expensive choices, while Anker, Bose, Audio-Technica, and Sony offer prices across a much wider range. The best alternative depends on whether the priority is lower cost, battery life, or stronger performance—but paying $549 is not the only way to get capable headphones.
