China’s Humanoid Robots Step Into the Real World

China’s robots are moving beyond flashy demonstrations and into measurable work. At the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, humanoid machines sorted packages, moved factory components, attempted household chores, and competed for attention with four-legged robotic dogs.
The conference brought a clear message: China’s robotics industry is building machines for factories, homes, and retail buyers, even as new United States security restrictions reshape the market. The opening also coincided with Unitree Robotics’ official stock market debut in Shanghai, giving the event a financial spotlight alongside its technology showcase.
A Robot Race Measured in Packages
One of the strongest demonstrations came from X Square Robot, whose two-armed WALL-B embodied model sorted 1,816 packages during an hour-long controlled test. That result placed it ahead of Figure AI’s bipedal Figure 03 robot, which handled an average of 1,248 parcels an hour.
The numbers matter because they turn a humanoid robot demonstration into a work-rate comparison. Both machines are designed around two arms and two legs, but the WALL-B performance showed how much progress can be packed into a task that demands repeated movement, object handling, and sorting.
China’s position in this market is already large. Nearly 90% of the more than 13,000 two-armed, two-legged robots delivered globally last year were made in China, giving Chinese manufacturers a powerful base as they push humanoid machines toward practical applications.
Yang Li, a senior engineer at X Square Robot, was connected to the WALL-B demonstration, while Yang Duan, a product manager at DexForce, described the broader promise of these machines: they “can free people from physical work and mundane chores.” That goal appeared across the conference floor, but the demonstrations also showed how far robots still have to go.
From Factory Floors to Living Rooms
UBTECH brought several industrial models to the conference, with some shifting component parts around simulated factory floor spaces. These displays focused on repeatable movement and workplace tasks, showing robots operating inside settings designed to resemble the environments where companies could deploy them.
UBTECH also presented a companion model aimed at individual buyers. Jiao Jichao, deputy president of UBTECH Robotics, said, “their companion model can converse, make facial expressions, rotate its neck and move its hands. It is available to individual retail buyers at a price of 168,000 yuan (over $24,000).”
That price places the machine beyond a casual purchase for many households, but its feature list points toward a different kind of robot market. Industrial robots perform defined jobs, while companion machines must communicate, move naturally, and respond in ways people can understand.
The conference floor also featured robotic dogs, including models displayed at the Beiren Yichuang International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Beijing on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. Their four-legged design gives them a different path through spaces where a bipedal robot may struggle, and the event placed humanoid robots and quadruped machines side by side.
Visitors saw the entertainment value of the demonstrations as well as the engineering behind them. An 11-year-old boy watched one machine and shouted, “Look, it is trying to do a handstand!” The moment captured the public appeal of robots that can perform movements people recognize, even when the machines are still testing their limits.
Where the Robots Still Stumble
Not every demonstration ended in a breakthrough. One robot attempted a simple household task by folding a shirt, but it struggled for several minutes and failed to complete the job.
That failure is more revealing than a polished performance. Sorting packages in a controlled test is one challenge; handling soft fabric inside a home is another. A shirt changes shape, slips from grippers, and refuses to behave like a rigid factory component, exposing the gap between controlled robotics work and everyday chores.
That gap will shape the next stage of the industry. The machines displayed in Beijing can sort, carry, converse, gesture, and entertain, yet reliable household help still demands major advances in perception and movement.
The policy environment adds another layer to the contest. The US Federal Communications Commission announced a ban covering imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots and power inverters, citing national security risks. The prohibition also encompasses new imports of quadruped robots, frequently called four-legged robot dogs.
With restrictions covering both humanoid and quadruped robots, Chinese manufacturers face a market shaped by more than performance and price. Unitree Robotics’ stock market debut in Shanghai, the WALL-B package test, and UBTECH’s retail companion model all point toward an industry building its own momentum.
The next question is no longer whether robots can impress a conference crowd. It is whether they can repeat useful tasks outside the exhibition hall, earn trust in factories and homes, and justify prices such as 168,000 yuan. China’s latest demonstrations suggest that the push has already begun.
