Proton’s Lumo 2.0 Brings Powerful AI with Privacy and Images

Proton has launched Lumo 2.0, a fresh upgrade to its privacy-focused AI chatbot. This new version adds image generation, analysis, and editing features. It also improves reasoning and context handling to better serve users’ needs.
One of the biggest wins with Lumo 2.0 is its strong privacy. Conversations involving images are protected by zero-access encryption. This means no one, not even Proton, can see your chats or images. Users get powerful AI without sacrificing privacy.
Performance also got a big boost. Lumo 2.0 Lite scored 127 percent higher than the previous 1.4 version on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. The top-tier Lumo 2.0 Max scored 240 percent higher, showing real leaps in intelligence and reasoning.
Proton’s founder and CEO, Andy Yen, said, “Lumo 2.0 has been re-engineered from the ground up and the introduction of thinking mode gives it powerful new capabilities.” He also added, “User testing demonstrates that the gap has closed to the point that for many use cases, users can no longer perceive a qualitative difference between Lumo 2.0 Max and the latest models from OpenAI and Anthropic.”
Yen highlighted that Lumo 2.0 proves users no longer need to choose between strong AI and privacy. Proton has clearly made privacy a priority without holding back on AI features.
Flexible Access and Pricing
Lumo 2.0 is available for free with core AI capabilities. This lets users explore many features without paying. There is a paid plan called Lumo Plus that costs $10 a month. It offers unlimited chats, advanced image generation, and access to Proton’s more advanced AI models.
Other plans include Lumo Professional at $14.99 per month and Lumo for Business at $24.99 per user per month. These options give users flexibility depending on their needs and budget.
Since launching Lumo in July 2025, Proton has gained 10 million users. That shows strong interest in a privacy-focused AI chatbot. The launch of Lumo 2.0 on June 30, 2026, adds even more value to this growing platform.
How Lumo 2.0 Fits into the Bigger AI Image Race
Proton isn’t the only company adding image features to AI chatbots. Google’s Gemini app also offers personalized image generation. Gemini’s image feature became available to all eligible free US users on June 29, 2026, one day before Lumo 2.0’s announcement.
Gemini taps into Google services like Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search to create images easily. It can pull photos directly from Google Photos without users needing to upload them manually. This makes image creation smooth and fast.
Google’s Group Product Manager, David Sharon, explained, “Personal Intelligence uses information from connected Google services to provide more relevant and personalized responses.” This feature is opt-in and can be turned on or off at any time.
Gemini lets users aged 13 and up generate images. Editing features, however, are limited to users 18 and older. Google also assures users that it does not train models on private Photos libraries, preserving privacy.
Both Proton and Google are pushing AI chatbots to handle images while respecting user privacy and offering strong AI performance. Proton’s Lumo 2.0 stands out with zero-access encryption and a focus on privacy-first AI.
The race between these services shows how AI is becoming more visual and interactive. It also shows that privacy and power can coexist in AI tools. Users now have better choices for AI chatbots that respect their privacy and deliver rich features.
