The Missing Pediatric Map Is Finally Taking Shape

Children remain a blind spot in medical data. Deanne Taylor is trying to change that by building better records of gene expression in children, while other health stories show how much still depends on accurate information.
Gene expression is the process of making proteins that perform specific jobs in the body. When that process differs between people, a therapy might work for one patient and harm another—an inconvenient detail for medicine’s tidy averages.
The Human Cell Atlas, a research project mapping every cell in the human body, initially planned to study only adults. Taylor’s work helped push children into that picture, creating a pediatric section through contributions from her and others.
A database built from donated pediatric tissue
Taylor joined the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as its director of bioinformatics three years before 2017. The timeline also places that appointment in 2017, making the record’s dates less clean than the biology it describes.
In 2017, Taylor attended a presentation at the University of Pennsylvania about the Human Cell Atlas. The event is also dated August 14, 2026, in the supplied timeline. “That’s when my little alarm went off,” Taylor said.
Her question was direct: “Why don’t we have healthy models of children’s development?” The answer now includes the Developmental Genotype-Tissue Expression Project, or dGTEx, which received a $38.5 million NIH grant in 2021 to establish the first comprehensive database of healthy pediatric tissue.
The project banks samples from otherwise healthy children who died after their parents agreed to donate their bodies. Taylor and her team curate and standardize the information linked to each tissue donation, turning a collection of difficult individual cases into data researchers can compare.
Sarah Teichmann described Taylor’s approach this way: “Deanne took a big-picture view and said, We don’t just need to understand the pediatric kidney or the pediatric brain or the pediatric immune system. We need a holistic view of pediatric development.”
Taylor describes her career as a “random walk” driven by undiagnosed autism and ADHD. She earned a PhD in biophysics in 2001 and worked on computer programs that screened embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before moving toward the broader problem of understanding children’s development.
Health technology meets less orderly reality
Google launched the Pixel Watch 5 with health tracking for blood pressure and insulin resistance. Alex Lee, IndyBest’s tech editor, is associated with the product coverage, but the larger point is familiar: wearable sensors keep moving closer to medical territory while clinical data remains uneven.
That unevenness also surfaced in Quebec, where an article by Robin Della Corte reported the closure of the maternity unit at Saint-Eustache hospital on August 14, 2026. The closure affects birth plans, adding logistical pressure to families already navigating a healthcare system that cannot always keep its services in place.
Food safety supplied its own reminder that public-health data can change without making the underlying risk disappear. Taylor Farms issued a voluntary recall on August 9, 2026, for products containing jalapeos, after those jalapeos were traced to Coast Citrus Distributors and a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico.
Taylor Farms, founded in 1995 by Bruce Taylor, employs more than 24,000 people and operates 22 production locations across North America. The company provides an estimated 265 million servings of fresh produce across North America each week, so a recall at that scale does not stay confined to one warehouse.
The company’s flagship facility in Salinas, California, suffered fire damage in April 2022, then was rebuilt and reopened a year later. Taco Bell was among the restaurant chains affected by the lettuce outbreak, while Qdoba stopped using the affected jalapeos.
As of August 5, more than 6,300 people had been sickened by cyclospora linked to iceberg lettuce. The ongoing outbreak had at least 1,644 confirmed illnesses, 94 hospitalizations, and no deaths as of July 16, while the broader outbreak had sickened 345 people across 27 states.
Taylor Farms said, “Today, FDA apologized to us. Yesterday, FDA informed Taylor Fresh Foods that one of its iceberg lettuce products from central Mexico tested positive for cyclospora. Today, we were informed that FDA made a mistake, and this was a false positive.”
The FDA answered that the false-positive sample did not change the basis for its ongoing outbreak investigation or the “overwhelming epidemiological data” supporting Taylor Farms’ voluntary recall. The lesson is not subtle: better data can reveal the problem, correct the record, or confirm that the problem remains.
