Technology is giving people more tools, more automation, and more reasons to lose patience. One word now captures a familiar part of that experience: a dickover, coined by tech writer John Gruber.
A dickover is a modal panel, popover, or curtain that a website or app places over its own content, blocking what the user came to see. The goal is not to help. It frustrates the user by turning access into an obstacle, and it has become an especially clear symbol of the current tech landscape.
AI features are being shoehorned into Google search, Instagram, and Spotify, even when the result feels unhelpful or annoying. Google Assistant, Google Gemini, and ChatGPT now sit inside a broader stream of automated interactions, where adding AI can matter more than making the experience better.
AI use looks different from the company pitch
The AI Observatory’s analysis paints a different picture from reports issued by major AI companies. Those company reports focus more on work, while the Observatory found many more sensitive behaviors in how people use AI.
People are more likely to turn to Anthropic for coding, Gemini for social and roleplay uses, and ChatGPT for homework assistance. That split matters because it shows how people assign different roles to AI systems, rather than treating every chatbot as the same kind of tool.
The gap between public use and polished company messaging also shows up in everyday annoyances. In 2026, cancelling an unwanted subscription should take exactly one mouse click, yet users often face multiple desperate pages or phone calls before they can leave. Someone who abandons an online shopping cart can also expect at least a week of needy emails from vendors.
ChatGPT has drawn attention for using more swear words, with the increase noticed around the switch from GPT-5.5 to GPT-5.6 Luna. Some users enjoy the extra profanity because it makes conversations feel more natural. AI brings new risks, from surveillance to addiction

The demand for power and hardware is also reshaping the global technology contest. The US plans to force partners to pick sides in the AI race and has warned allies against joining China’s AI initiative. In China, memory chipmaker CXMT is now the country’s most valuable company, reflecting Beijing’s push for strategic hardware.
That race is unfolding alongside practical problems that have nothing to do with chatbots. Puerto Rico is rationing water and could harvest rainwater instead, with up to 30 billion gallons available each year. In another infrastructure example, a blizzard caused about 10% of Lincoln Electric System’s 150,000 customers to lose power.
Technology headlines are reaching into stranger territory too. Astronomers have found evidence for a “black hole star” that is 100,000 times bigger than the Sun. A robot named “Superman” has reached 12.66 meters per second, while women made up 26% of new AI hires last year.
The money behind this industry creates its own kind of spectacle. A billionaire Gen Zer dropped out of high school to launch a startup at 17 and is now the richest self-made 25-year-old in the UK and Europe. Another dropout, who lived in a trailer, received $1 million from Peter Thiel at 19 and is now a billionaire.
Put together, these stories show a tech industry moving in every direction at once. It is adding AI to familiar products, building immense computing sites, competing over chips, and testing new limits around privacy and power. And for ordinary users, the experience can still come down to whether a dickover blocks the screen or whether cancelling a subscription takes one click.
