Apple’s First Foldable Makes a $1,999 Case for Two Screens

Apple has entered the foldable phone market. The company announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, with dual displays, a titanium chassis, and software controls rebuilt for the format. Pre-orders begin October 20, 2026, at 7:00 pm EST, with the first units shipping on October 23.
The base model costs $1,999 and includes 256GB of storage. That price buys a 5.4-inch outer OLED display with 120Hz ProMotion support and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, plus a 7.6-inch inner panel with a resolution of 1,398 x 2,034 and a 1:1.4 aspect ratio.
The outer screen handles the usual phone duties, while the inner display provides the larger workspace. Apple finished that inner panel with a matte nanotexture surface, and the crease is barely visible. Foldables have spent years asking buyers to tolerate a line down the middle; Apple’s answer is to make the line difficult to see.
A Foldable Built Around Its Inner Display
Allison Johnson praised the display after using the iPhone Duo for seven days. “Nano-texture was the right move,” she said, adding, “The matte screen is the best thing about the Duo, and I hope every other foldable maker copies it.”
Johnson described the practical benefit during video viewing: “The benefits proved out while I used the phone for the past seven days. I propped it up on my tray table to watch an episode of Widow’s Bay. The matte screen effectively fought off the glare from the open window in my row.” Her previous employer was DPReview, and her comments place the inner screen at the center of the Duo’s appeal.
The phone uses a hinge that can hold the device open in various positions, while the titanium chassis holds the structure together. The iPhone Duo also carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, giving the foldable protection against dust and water that its price demands.
Apple made one conspicuous biometric change: the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID on the power button instead of Face ID. The camera system is also restrained, with two lenses—a main lens and a wide-angle lens—rather than a larger array.
Weight, Cost, and the Foldable Tax
The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams, or 8.9 ounces, and measures 11.3mm, or 0.44 inches, thick when closed. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams, or 7.09 ounces, and measures 9.7mm, or 0.38 inches, closed, making the comparison unkind to Apple on both weight and thickness.
Apple offers up to $885 in trade-in value, while interest-free installment payments start at $83.29 per month for 24 months. Apple Card financing starts at $57.99 per month for 24 months, which turns a large upfront price into a smaller recurring reminder.
Carrier promotions cut the cost further. AT&T offers up to $1,200 in trade-in credit, T-Mobile offers up to $1,000, and T-Mobile Mobile Plus customers can receive a $400 discount through Xfinity Mobile Plus.
The iPhone Duo supports 50 percent charge in 20 minutes with the 40W Power Adapter. Apple has not merely folded an existing phone in half; it has paired the hardware with revamped iOS 27 controls and apps designed for the two-screen layout.
Sam Rutherford reviewed the iPhone Duo on October 21, 2026, at 8:00 am EST. News about the device appeared on October 19, 2026, at 10:24 AM UTC, and Apple described pre-order demand as “extraordinary.” Filipe Espósito wrote, “Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin this Friday, and the first units will be shipped to buyers on October 23.”
The iPhone Duo’s pitch is straightforward: a bright outer screen, a large matte inner display, flexible hinge positions, updated iOS 27 controls, and Touch ID in place of Face ID. At $1,999, with more weight and thickness than the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Apple is asking buyers to pay for a first-generation foldable while trusting that the screen experience makes the compromise worthwhile.
