Google’s Trade-In Values Make Expensive Pixels Easier to Buy

The Pixel 11 lineup makes old phones worth checking. The base Pixel 11 starts at $899, while the Pixel 11 Pro Fold starts at $1,900. Those prices make trade-in credit less like a bonus and more like basic arithmetic.

Google’s trade-in program can offer strong value for phones that would otherwise sit in a drawer. A 128GB Pixel 9 Pro XL, which launched in 2024 at $1,099, brings up to $255 with Apple, $310 with Amazon, or $300 at Best Buy—but Google’s program offers several hundred more.

That difference matters because trade-in values vary by retailer, device, and purchase terms. Best Buy’s rates are typically lower, but the retailer includes a gift card worth up to $350 for the Pro Fold when purchasing a Pixel device. Amazon offers bundles that include either a gift card or a discounted Pixel Watch 5.

Older phones still have a trade-in value

Google accepts phones that other buyers might dismiss as ancient history. The original Pixel is worth $100, while the Galaxy S10 and iPhone 6s Plus each bring $30 through the Google trade-in program.

Several newer older models can produce a more useful discount: the Pixel 4a and Galaxy S20 are each worth $150, and the iPhone 11 is worth $200. The program does not require a recent flagship to make the exchange worthwhile—though newer phones command the better numbers.

A Pixel 10 Pro is worth $600, the Galaxy S26 Ultra reaches $700, and the iPhone 17 brings $550. The gap between an aging phone and a current model is wide, but even $30 can beat leaving a working device in a drawer forever.

How Google’s trade-in process works

To start, open the Google Store, select a Pixel phone, and choose “Get estimate” under “Trade in your phone.” Enter the old device’s details, confirm its condition, add the trade-in, and proceed to checkout.

Google then sends instructions for preparing and shipping the device. That preparation includes moving your data, performing a factory reset, and removing locks or passwords; shipping is free with a prepaid kit.

One setting deserves attention before the phone leaves your hands. Select “Accept the new value if it changes after inspection” to keep the trade-in value if the device does not match the specifications entered online.

That choice matters because Google inspects the device after receiving it. Some customers qualify for instant trade-in, so the discount applies upfront; others receive a refund after the device arrives and passes inspection.

The main lesson is simple: compare the offer before committing to a retailer. A Pixel 9 Pro XL can bring $255 with Apple, $310 with Amazon, or $300 at Best Buy, while Google offers several hundred more for the same phone under its program. The old handset may not be treasure, but it is not automatically junk either.
