Windows Has Quiet Ways to Waste GPU Memory and Disk Space

Cheap GPUs have a Windows tax. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling can consume memory that older cards cannot spare, while Windows cleanup tools and uninstalled games leave valuable storage behind. The operating system offers solutions, but finding the useful ones still requires detective work.

HAGS trades memory for a feature few games need

Windows 11 includes a hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling toggle under Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Advanced graphics settings. HAGS is enabled on most PCs, though it is not completely clear whether Windows 11 turns it on by default; one desktop that predates its rollout has the feature enabled without its owner ever switching it on.

Microsoft introduced HAGS in a May 2020 Windows 10 update. Before then, a high-priority CPU thread scheduled work sent to the graphics card; with HAGS enabled, the GPU handles most scheduling through dedicated hardware while Windows still decides which applications go first.

Microsoft compared the change to “rebuilding the foundation of a house while still living in it” and said users “should not notice any significant changes.” That promise has held for frame rates. A 2020 test using an RTX 2080 Ti and GTX 1050 found average changes between minus 0.73 percent and plus 0.06 percent, while another test found no meaningful gains across its games and a repeatable 2.4 percent drop in F1 2019 on a four-core Intel Core i3.

The more interesting cost is VRAM. Turning HAGS off on an 8GB RTX 2070 Super freed nearly 950MB of graphics memory, costing three to five frames per second; textures that had stuttered in Cyberpunk 2077 and Stellar Blade loaded properly afterward. That is a poor trade for a 12GB card, but a useful one when a 6GB RTX 2060 or 8GB card is already full.

HAGS is required for DLSS Frame Generation, so disabling it removes that feature. Cards with 12GB of VRAM or more can leave HAGS on, especially when using frame generation; owners of 6GB or 8GB cards should test each game, and OBS recommends turning it off when recording or streaming causes problems. Nvidia added support for GTX 10-series cards and newer in the 451.48 driver, AMD added support for the RX 7900, 7800 and 7700 in December 2023, and Intel supports it only on Arc B-series cards.

Steam’s September 2026 hardware survey found that 8GB cards still represent more than a quarter of GPUs, behind only 16GB cards, while 6GB cards account for 5.12 percent. Restart Windows after changing HAGS, then run a few simple benchmarks before and after. Revolutionary scheduling has produced results close to statistical lint, but VRAM pressure gives the toggle a practical purpose.

Windows cleanup tools miss the storage that matters

On a 1TB C: drive with about 4 percent free space, Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense each offered to remove only 1.66GB. Microsoft PC Manager listed 26GB, though 15.5GB of that was not junk and remained unticked; the drive held roughly 20GB of real junk.

The difference was coverage. Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense found about 8 percent of the actual junk, while PC Manager covered about 90 percent. The largest offenders were a 9.25GB NVIDIA shader cache, about 5GB of Chrome cache across four profiles and 2.2GB of application crash dumps—files both Windows tools missed.

Disk Cleanup has shipped with every Windows version since Windows 98. Storage Sense lives under Settings > System > Storage and overlaps with Disk Cleanup category for category through its “Temporary files” list, but it can also empty the Recycle Bin, clear Downloads and remove temporary files on a schedule.

By default, Storage Sense only runs when disk space is low. On the test drive, Windows reported “0 bytes” cleaned in the past month, even with 3.9 percent free space; files from six months earlier still sat in the Recycle Bin. Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense and change its schedule from During low free disk space to every day, week or month. Recycle Bin and Downloads limits can be set from 0 to 60 days.

PC Manager was the most thorough option, preticking 8.9GB as safe to remove while leaving a 9GB NVIDIA cache and 2.7GB of Python files unticked. Its Manage large files tool found 238GB of files larger than 10MB. CCleaner is best skipped after Avast’s Piriform pulled version 5.45 in 2018 for collecting more usage data than users expected.

Even removing every byte of junk moved free space from about 4 percent to only 6 or 7 percent. The real culprits are video games, video files and photo libraries. Windows cleanup is useful, but it cannot negotiate with a 40GB game.

Uninstalling games does not erase their history

The original Tomb Raider needed about 100MB of drive space; Shadow of the Tomb Raider needs 40GB, a roughly 400-fold jump. Patches, DLC and extra content sit on top of a game’s listed install size, while Steam treats owned DLC as part of the game and may need more free space than the patch download because it builds new files before removing old ones.

Fallout 76 added a 54GB day-one patch to its 45GB base install, and The Division 2 updates could require 48GB to 52GB on Xbox One and PC. Language packs, shader caches, screenshots, mods, crash dumps and Workshop content add more clutter; Steam stores pre-compiled shaders in steamapps/shadercache, while Windows keeps its DirectX shader cache under Temporary files.

Uninstalling a Steam game removes what Steam installed, not everything the game created elsewhere. Saves and settings may remain in Documents, My Games or AppData, and shader caches can survive in folders named after the game’s App ID. Back up saves or confirm Steam Cloud support first, then remove unwanted caches and screenshots; games rebuild shader caches when launched again, sometimes with stutter during the first session.

On PS5, Astro Bot’s 63 trophies—44 in the base game and 19 in DLC—can generate screenshots and clips through recent-gameplay recording. Sony lets users disable trophy videos or restrict them to higher-grade trophies, and the Media Gallery stores the results. A 210GB Grand Theft Auto VI download listing would consume nearly a third of a base PS5’s roughly 667GB of usable space, though Rockstar has not confirmed that figure.

Virtual desktops provide free screen space

Windows 10 and both versions of Windows 11 support multiple desktops, letting one monitor hold separate work areas without hiding every open program. Press Windows + Tab and select New desktop, or use Windows + Ctrl + D; switch with Windows + Ctrl + Left/Right arrow and close one with Windows + Ctrl + F4.

Task View also lets users rename desktops, choose wallpapers in Windows 11, reorder them and drag windows between them. Settings > System > Multitasking controls whether the taskbar and Alt + Tab show windows from the current desktop or all desktops. Windows Virtual Desktop Helper, a free program on GitHub, can display desktop names, show the active desktop in the system tray and assign custom navigation hotkeys.
