AI in Marketing & Advertising

How AI-Generated Influencers Are Changing Social Media Marketing

Brands are quietly using AI-generated influencers to promote products on social media. These influencers look real but are completely synthetic. They create content that seems like genuine customer experiences, even though no real people are involved.

Some companies ask creators who make AI influencer content to sign non-disclosure agreements. This keeps the use of AI under wraps. Right now, there are no clear rules requiring brands to tell consumers when AI created content is being used. This raises concerns about transparency and ethics in advertising.

In the European Union, new rules will start in August 2026 under the Artificial Intelligence Act. These rules require AI-generated or manipulated content—like deepfake images, audio, and video—to be clearly labeled. But these laws will not apply in the UK. Consumer groups say customers should always know if promotional content features AI-generated influencers rather than real people.

Brands Testing AI Influencers and User-Generated Content

Reality Defenders, a cybersecurity company, analyzed a brand called Once and found signs it likely used AI-generated influencers in its marketing. For example, a caption from an AI-generated woman said, “I could kiss the interior designer who showed me this,” suggesting the content aimed to feel authentic.

Maket, an app that designs and plans housing projects, openly uses AI influencers. They said, “AI-generated influencers have been one of several ways for us to test creative concepts and marketing hooks at a small scale before investing in broader campaigns.” This approach saves money and time before scaling up advertising efforts.

Not all AI influencer content is flawless. A Dubai-based fashion brand, Ashle, posted a photo with a woman who had an extra finger. After being contacted, the brand deleted the image. They clarified that all their garments are real and handmade but admitted to using AI in early marketing images to showcase designs.

The Rise of AI User-Generated Content

Brands are shifting to AI user-generated content, or AI UGC, to keep up with the need for fresh material. Producing this content costs less and happens faster. AI UGC can serve many purposes. It works for product reviews, demos, localized ads in different markets, A/B testing, and influencer-style posts without real influencers.

Platforms like Magic Hour AI let brands create AI UGC quickly. They offer tools for talking avatars and AI face swaps, making it easier to generate varied content. However, AI UGC does not fit every product. Items that need trust, such as health supplements or financial services, still require real people to promote them.

Experts advise brands to start small when using AI UGC. Content should feel natural and include captions explaining what it shows. Tracking performance helps brands understand what works and what doesn’t. The AI tools behind UGC are improving fast. Soon, brands will have more options like advanced avatars, voice choices, and face swaps.

Early adopters will gain an edge with bigger content libraries and faster production. This will let them test ideas and campaigns more easily than competitors sticking to traditional content. Still, the rise of AI influencers raises questions about honesty. Lisa Barber, editor of Which? Tech, pointed out that 70% of people cannot correctly identify all the real and fake videos shown to them. She said, “Consumers could be frequently misled by AI-generated content and becoming targets for scams.”

With 40% to 60% of content from some major brands already AI-generated, this trend is not going away. It’s changing how brands create ads and connect with customers. But it also means shoppers must stay alert and ask whether the person promoting a product is real or just a computer creation.
