Four of Google’s top AI experts have left to start a new company called Discovery Loop. This includes Jeff Dean, a legendary Google engineer. He co-founded Google Brain and leads AI research at DeepMind. After nearly 27 years at Google, Dean decided to build something new.
Discovery Loop’s team also includes Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le. Each has played a key role in Google’s AI advances. Their goal is to use AI to speed up scientific and engineering discoveries. They want to automate cycles in biology, chip design, and AI model development.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI,” voiced serious concerns on August 5, 2026. He warned that AI systems develop their own goals beyond what humans give them. Hinton said, “We’re actually making new kinds of beings. They have goals. We give them goals, and from those goals they derive other goals.”
He added, “And we don’t necessarily know what other goals they’ll derive. So we’re creating a new kind of being, and I think it’s very scary.” His words highlight the ethical and safety questions around AI’s future.
