Pixel 11’s Biggest Upgrade May Be Sign Language Transcription

Google’s Pixel 11 series arrives with a feature that may matter more than its camera upgrades: DeepMind’s new sign-language-to-text model, known as SL2T. The model is built into Gboard and Live Transcribe, allowing deaf and hard of hearing users to sign to their phone in places where they would have typed before.

At launch, SL2T supports American Sign Language, or ASL, and translates it into English. DeepMind trained the model on more than 100,000 hours of multilingual sign language data, with approximately a quarter of that dataset representing ASL.

That multilingual training serves a specific purpose. DeepMind trained SL2T across multiple languages so it could learn shared structures in sign language, rather than treating each language as an isolated system.

DeepMind described the goal in clear terms: “There is great diversity among deaf people in terms of their level of proficiency in signing, speaking, reading, and writing, so it is important to support access in all modalities.” The company also said, “Deaf people can benefit from sign language processing in the same way that hearing people benefit from spoken language processing, plus the technology opens new possibilities for bridging the communication gap between Deaf and hearing communities.”

SL2T does not interpret raw video. A separate on-device model first converts footage into geometric coordinates, then sends those coordinates to Google’s servers. SL2T turns the resulting wireframes into text instead of producing glosses, giving the system a path from hand movement to written language.

Pixel 11 focuses on power, cameras, and Gemini

The Pixel 11 has a 30-hour battery and runs on Google’s Tensor G6 processor. Google says Tensor G6 delivers up to 20 percent better power efficiency than Tensor G5 and allows 25 percent faster browsing.

The phone includes a 6.3-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2424 pixels and refresh rates from 60 to 120Hz. Its peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits. Display sizes remain the same across Pixel phones, while Pro models have a slightly brighter display.

Google upgraded the Pixel 11’s main camera to a 48-megapixel lens with a larger sensor and better light sensitivity. The rear camera system also includes a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto lens with up to 5x optical zoom. Rear cameras can record 4K video at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second, while Super Res Zoom provides an equivalent of 30x zoom.

The front camera is 10.5 megapixels and can record 4K video. Google also added custom camera looks with specialized filters, and Magic Capture can pick the best frames from hundreds, auto-crop them, and unblur them.

Pro phones raise the zoom limit from 100x to 120x, while the base Pixel 11 moves from 20x to 30x. Pro models also have an updated main camera sensor for higher-quality photos, and their telephoto sensor captures 32 percent more light in an image. Instant Night Sight takes 4.5 times less time than previous Night Sight, while video shooting supports 8K resolution with video boost and better stability.

Google’s hardware changes are measured, but the Pixel 11 lineup adds more Gemini features. Gemini can provide Wispr Flow-like transcription, translate content live, and use a camera feature that captures the right frames.

Gemini can also order groceries, book rides, get coffee, and call businesses on a user’s behalf. Users can take over or stop these tasks at any point, then review transcripts of AI-operated calls. A new set of connected apps works with Gemini, including Granola, Otter.ai, Wix, Fever, Get Your Guide, Localiza, OpenTable in the U.K., Ticketmaster, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Angi, Thumbtack, and Zocdoc.

Magic Cue now pulls information from across apps to suggest dinner spots or shows. Rambler, a dictation product, is also making its way to Pixel phones. Google added an LED indicator around the flashlight that signals calls or messages when Gemini is thinking or listening.

Pricing, accessories, and the Pixel Tag

Pre-orders for Pixel 11 open on August 12, 2026, at 10:00 am EST, and shipments begin August 20, 2026. The phone starts at $899, with 256GB as the minimum storage option and a 512GB version also available. Color choices include Frost, Pistachio, Hibiscus, and Obsidian, and Google promises seven years of security upgrades.

Pixel Buds in a new Olive color can be preordered with the Pixel 11. Google also announced a partnership with Abbott to integrate data from Abbott’s Lingo continuous glucose monitoring system.

The company’s other major hardware launch is Pixel Tag, an AirTag competitor for Android devices. The tracker has an elongated pill shape measuring 1.8 inches tall, 1.1 inches wide, and 0.2 inches thick. It works with phones running Android 9 and later, while Bluetooth Channel Sounding requires Android 16 or later and Bluetooth 6.0.

Pixel Tag includes Ultra Wideband for Precision Finding and carries an IP67 rating for dust and splash resistance. It can remain submerged in 3.28 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. A replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery lasts about a year.

Pixel Tag costs $29, with shipments starting August 20, 2026. A four-pack costs $99.
