Threads Hits 500 Million Monthly Users Fueled by Communities and Control Features
Threads has crossed the half-billion monthly active user mark. It did so just shy of its third anniversary, proving it’s no flash in the pan.
Meta credits the surge to its Communities feature. These groups gather users around shared interests—from basketball to parenting—making conversations stickier. Communities are no longer in beta. The app now offers a dedicated Communities hub, unique icons for groups, and localized tags in markets like Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
Daily active users hover around 150 million and continue climbing worldwide. Meta claims more users open Threads directly instead of through Instagram or Facebook, signaling organic growth beyond initial hype.
Threads’ early success leaned on Instagram’s network. Users could instantly follow their Instagram contacts, avoiding the cold-start problem that kills most new social apps. This link gave Threads a head start, but now its growth is community-driven.
Meta also rolled out new algorithm controls. Earlier this year, users could publicly request feed tweaks through “Dear Algo.” Now, “Your Algo” lets users privately adjust what they see, setting preferences for one to seven days. This feature launches in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, promising a more personalized, less chaotic feed.
Despite hitting 500 million users, Threads remains a weak revenue driver. Meta started showing ads in 200 countries but doesn’t expect Threads to boost earnings meaningfully this year. The focus remains on engagement and user experience.
On the tech front, Threads hasn’t embraced crypto or blockchain. Meta abandoned its stablecoin plans years ago and shows no interest in NFTs or tokens on Threads. The platform’s only crypto connection is scam accounts impersonating figures—hardly a selling point.
Meta is exploring ActivityPub federation, which could link Threads to decentralized social networks like Mastodon. Current integration is limited, though. Full federation could bridge centralized users with the emerging “fediverse.” For now, it’s a work in progress.
Mark Zuckerberg aims for Threads to reach one billion users. The company’s bet on communities and algorithm control is its best shot to keep growing and keep users inside its ecosystem.
Threads remains a compelling challenger in text-based social media. Its rapid growth, fresh features, and platform integration keep it relevant. But monetization and decentralized ambitions lag behind.
