Why Your PS5 Games Suddenly Show a Padlock

A padlock over a PlayStation 5 game thumbnail can stop a gaming session before it starts. The symbol points to a license problem, an authentication issue, or a subscription problem—but several fixes can restore access and get the game running again.

“Being locked out of your own games isn’t fun, but there are solutions to get back in,” Girts Ragelis says. The first step is understanding what the padlock means, because the icon does not always point to the same failure.

What the PS5 Padlock Symbol Means

When a padlock appears over a game in the PS5 library, the game is inaccessible because the console cannot confirm the license or subscription connected to it. The license may have been withdrawn, or the PS5 may face an authentication issue that prevents it from confirming access.

Subscription access can also decide whether a game opens. Your PlayStation Plus subscription status matters, and the games included with that subscription can affect what remains available in your library. A game that once worked may show a padlock when its access depends on a subscription that no longer covers it.

Disc-based games can create another warning sign. A disc should act as a key that authenticates the game, so a padlock on a disc-based title indicates that the disc is not performing that role. That points to a licensing or authentication problem rather than a normal game-library display.

Gamesharing adds another layer. Multiple users can play another person’s games when Console Sharing and Offline Play are enabled, but that setup can affect access when the console or account cannot confirm the required permissions.

Steps That Can Restore Game Access

Start with the account connection. Sign out of your PlayStation account, then sign back in. This can refresh the authentication link between the account and the game library, giving the PS5 another chance to confirm the license.

Next, check the PlayStation Status page to verify PSN status. If PSN has a service problem, the console may not be able to complete the checks needed to open a game, even when the game and account are otherwise correct.

Restoring licenses is another key fix. Select “Restore License” in the game options, or find “Restore License” in Settings. This process can help the PS5 reconnect your games with the licenses attached to your account.

Restarting the PS5 can clear a temporary licensing failure, while installing system updates can address problems tied to the console’s software. If the padlock remains after those steps, booting the PS5 into Safe Mode can help resolve database glitches in an extreme case.

  • Check your PlayStation Plus subscription status and the games included with it.
  • Confirm that Console Sharing and Offline Play are enabled when using gamesharing.
  • Sign out and sign back into your PlayStation account.
  • Check PSN status using the PlayStation Status page.
  • Restore licenses through the game options or Settings.
  • Restart the PS5 and install system updates.
  • Use Safe Mode when a database glitch may be involved.

The issue carries extra weight as Sony plans to stop making disc-based games beginning in January 2028. “Sony’s plans to stop making disc-based games beginning in January 2028 mean digital games need to work flawlessly,” says Girts Ragelis.

When the Problem Is Distorted PS5 Audio

The PS5 can also frustrate players with distorted audio, even when games open without a padlock. Loose connections, incorrect output settings, and faulty cables can all create audio problems, so troubleshooting should start with the full connection chain.

Restart every device, then check each connection. Test the PS5 with headphones and different audio sources to narrow down whether the console, television, sound system, cable, or connection is causing the distortion. Switching HDMI ports and cables can resolve connection-related audio problems.

Simplifying the setup can reveal the faulty device. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV instead of routing it through other equipment, then test the sound again. If the audio improves, one of the removed devices or connections may be responsible.

Match the PS5 audio settings to the sound system, including Output Device and Audio Format. Linear PCM is recommended for uncompressed audio output and supports up to 7.1 channels. For multiple channels such as 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, use the correct HDMI port—eARC or ARC—and enable the appropriate settings on the TV.

TV and sound system audio format settings can also change the result, so check and adjust those settings when the sound remains distorted. “Turning up the volume might help, but it won’t fix distorted audio coming from your PlayStation 5,” Jack Whitcombe says.

Headphone problems need their own checks. Unplug and reconnect headphone cables, adjust the volume, and toggle 3D Audio settings. Wireless headphones may require adapters, and reducing interference can improve audio quality.

The padlock and the distorted-audio problem look different, but both reward a methodical check of accounts, settings, connections, and hardware. With Sony’s January 2028 shift away from disc-based games ahead, reliable licensing and clean audio will matter even more to every PS5 library and living-room setup.
