Apple Raises Hardware Prices Amid Soaring Memory Costs

Apple is raising prices on its Mac and iPad lines due to soaring memory costs. The company confirmed this shift on June 24, 2026, citing an ongoing global shortage in DRAM and NAND storage components.
Apple CEO Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that rising component expenses have made upward price adjustments “inevitable.” He described the market as “outside any normal pattern” he has seen in four decades of supply chain work.
The price surge follows a quadrupling in the cost of DRAM and NAND storage compared to last year. Industry data from Morgan Stanley forecasts a 30% increase in DRAM wafer production capacity by 2027, yet supply will still fall 15% short of demand for consumer devices.
Memory shortages stem partly from massive capital spending by Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Google. These tech giants are funneling production capacity into specialized AI chips, squeezing supply for smartphones and PCs alike.
TechInsights estimates that the jump in memory costs could add roughly $270 to the production cost of an iPhone Pro model if Apple keeps its current profit margins. Analysts expect the Mac and iPad lines to see price hikes soon, while the upcoming iPhone 18, launching this September, faces high risk for a similar increase.
Apple’s hardware requires more DRAM to support new on-device AI features, such as updated Siri functionality. This demand intensifies pressure on already tight memory supplies, pushing costs higher.
Other hardware makers like Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Nintendo have already raised prices in response to the same supply challenges. Apple’s moves follow a broader industry trend of passing rising component costs onto consumers.
Cook called the price increases “unavoidable,” underscoring an era of disruption few expected to endure this long. Consumers can expect sticker shock when the changes hit shelves, but the company has yet to announce exact timing.
