Arrest Over Speaking Time Sparks Controversy in Claremore Meeting

In February 2026, a man named Darren Blanchard was arrested in Claremore, Oklahoma. The reason? He spoke just a few seconds longer than the three-minute limit at a public meeting about data centers.
The meeting was held by the Claremore City Council on February 17. When Blanchard went a little over time, two police officers told him to leave. When he asked why, they arrested him for criminal trespass.
Sergeant Sanger gave the order to arrest Blanchard. The officers told him, “You need to leave,” and later, “Sir, you’ve been asked to leave,” before the arrest.
Blanchard faces a trespassing charge carrying a $200 penalty. Despite this, he says his arrest was about silencing him. “I continue to maintain that my arrest was retaliatory, as I was engaging in protected speech at a public meeting,” he said.
Blanchard has no criminal history. His legal team filed a motion to dismiss the charge. They also requested that the city’s attorney recuse himself from the case.
Bodycam Footage and Its Cost
Blanchard shared the bodycam footage of his arrest for the first time with 404 Media. The video shows how the officers handled the situation.
The City of Claremore initially billed Blanchard $1,750 for the bodycam footage. This raised eyebrows. Amber Robinson Rodriguez, a local resident, said, “Absolutely not, I would never pay $1,750 for records that are public records.”
After some pushback, the city lowered the cost to $120. The reduction was reported on June 19, 2026.
Free Speech and Public Meetings
This incident highlights tensions around free speech during public meetings. Claremore officials set a strict three-minute speaking limit to keep meetings on track.
But Blanchard’s arrest raises questions about enforcing those limits fairly. He argues his speech was protected, and that the arrest was retaliation for his views on data centers.
Data centers have become a hot topic in Claremore. The community is divided over their growth and impact. Public meetings like this are where citizens often voice their concerns.
When a resident is arrested for speaking too long, it can chill free speech. It also makes people question how much control local authorities hold over public discussion.
Blanchard’s case is still unfolding. His motion to dismiss and the call for the city attorney’s recusal show the legal battle ahead. Meanwhile, the reduced cost of the bodycam footage makes the video more accessible to the public.
This story is a reminder that public meetings are meant to be open forums. They should balance order with respect for citizens’ rights to speak freely, even when opinions run long.
